Hello. Yes, it was truly a great era, the likes of which will never be seen again. I imagine the "EDM" scene in America to be much like the vibe of 1999. The Americans, at last, seem to have "got" dance music. Everything has completely changed, and that includes us. I've just made a playlist in my iTunes of all of the old Jules radio shows i have, this site has given me lots of them. They are memories, from what, 16-17 years ago(!) that will always be treasured, and never forgotten, somehow. Dance music now is so disposable, you hear it one minute, forget about it the next. Every kid now has a copy of FL Studio and can make a tune and stick it on Beatport, of course, using ReFX Nexus for their sounds...just like everyone else. Back in the day, you had to be serious, serious enough to drop about 5-10K on a studio setup, thats before you made a tune and got it pressed up and distributed. That grass roots level has gone now, sadly. When someone has to spend money on getting something going, they make sure its as good as it can be, whereas now, tunes are knocked out in hours, no promotion, no hyping up. Just straight played out and everyone has access to them. We have to remember, the whole super club thing has well and truly gone. most of the chain clubs are struggling too. People want trendy bars these days that play downtempo tropical house/deep house. I think the thing that really upsets me is, you can't be a DJ now, unless you are a producer. This in turn just saturates the record market with half baked productions. Anyone notices now also, how, seeing an A-lister is like going to a festival, its all about the show. Its overblown, and too epic now. Its a real shame. Of course, if you're 21, i'm sure the scene is amazing and all of that, and i'm just a whiney old 30 something harping on...but i don't think it is Moorman

@A2a I had that show on tape, but i lost when i moved in with an ex. That is the one show out of all of them that i would love to hear again. It is a shame Jules is gone. His contribution to dance music cannot be underestimated. But here we are again, Radio 1 have 1Xtra, which dubstep in my eyes, clearly fits onto, yet its wheeled out on Radio 1. This annoys the hell out of me. Anyway, enough of that, The final mix started well enough, and the first three tracks did trigger some memories. It's scary that "the bass" is 5 years old already! wow. When it started, it was like Jules of old, however as Briggsy stated, it just slowed down to the sound of now. It truly is the end of an era. I remember first tuning in around mid 99 time, hearing Mario Piu "Communication" (Yomanda Remix) and thinking WTF is this shit, yet it stayed on and i got hooked and listened in without fail every week - especially from 1999-2002.

defo the Friday night shows. As already said, the music was immense, and it had an air of freshness about it - you could feel the excitement jules got from the tunes too. Not only that, but when i started listening i was 16 back then! - oh to go back I enjoyed the saturday shows too with Danny Rampling following, was so good. Radio 1 between 1999 and 2002 just got their weekend schedule so right, that nay change was simply going to ruin it. Well, i'm listening to Jules last show now, whilst for the last 5 years i havent really listened (been more into Tong) i simply cannot forget the impact the old friday night shows had on me.

Back again with new mixes, probably off the back of Avicii's new found fame (which has gone forward as the main mix and was the original release for the nadio ali version). I got that track like, 18 months ago off beatport!!

i get a feeling this may be more aimed at scratch DJ's. Especially if the Americans have anything to do with it. Either that, or it will be DJ Hero style cutting up etc, which i guess falls more with hip hop/cut & paste dj's anyway. Personally i think this is embarrassing, Tom is right, Cowell has seen the success the likes of Guetta, Afrojack, SHM, Calvin Harris have all had (especially over the last year) in the charts, and wants a piece. As craig has also pointed out, what makes me sick is these people that do actually "make it" off the back of this show, will have never had to play clubs with shite gear, never had to put the 3-4 hours in a day to practice, the long hard slog just trying to get one gig, like we've all had to do. It will be full of Geordie Shore types, who dont really know anything about djing or what works, just the fact they look good, party hard, and shag around.

I'm surprised you are having these problems. I'm running a 2 year old laptop (though it was top of the line at the time, and is still better than current) with Windows 7, Aero themes on, wifi on, and stuff like messenger running! I've got the latency set to the tightest aswell. The CPU load (even with 4 decks on and running key correction never goes above 60%. Traktor needs and has always wanted plenty of RAM, whereas Serato likes to have raw processing power. My laptop has 4 gb RAM, Intel i5 processor and a stupidly big hardrive. The music library is also massive. So it shouldnt be running aswell as what it is. What are the specs of your computer. BTW, i told you, Traktor and midi controllers rock. Second best method behinf some technics and a mixer!

i just hope they dont get rid of Tong. How can they? He is still relevant and has moved with the times, which is why he is still going strong.

this is sad news indeed, but as most have already said, its been a while coming, even i said it last year that his time was coming to an end. What worries me, is Tong will be next, but who on earth do they replace him with? There is no one who immediately springs to mind except Dave Spoon (His in new dj's we trust shows were excellent and vastly underrated). Radio 1 needs to keep house dj's at least, if they are phasing out trance djs. If Tong goes, i can safely say i will no longer be listening to Radio 1 at all. But anyway, Jules...what a legend. Calvin Harris recently tweeted about this, and it summed it up perfectly. He said "if it werent for Judge Jules old friday + Saturday night shows, I would never have got into dance music". So true, and its something i think that resonates with all of us. We all remember Jules from 98-2001 being his best years. On his day, there was no one that could touch him. I've had many a good night out listening to Jules, and the radio shows, timeless! Radio 1 are a strange bunch, they seem to think they know what people want, but do they? I'm very surprised that Skream & Benga are the replacements. Dubstep to me, is urban music, so why are they not on 1Xtra? This is what annoys me, they have a dedicated "black music" station, so why not keep it all uniform? I think to say farewell, i'd like Jules to play his personal favourites, mixed in with some banter about his memories from certain times etc. Jules, thanks for opening my ears to house music, and getting me into it all. Thanks for the memories and those 1999-2000 radio shows, they were truly epic.

so, i havent done a mix for a while as i havent had my gear setup. So anyway, i upgraded to Traktor Pro 2, and its awesome. However, i'm still seriously thinking about gettin an Akai APC 40 and using Ableton. So anyway, heres the mix. My tastes have changed somewhat. BORING! The best nights ive had out this year (in Ibiza particularly) were listening to no name dj's playing tunes that are fresh. The problem with, certainly the top 20, is, they all play the same tunes. How many of them said their big tune of the year was either Avicii "Levels" or SHM "Save The World"?

and for the price of a second hand car, those CDJ2000's STILL CANT DO some of the stuff Ableton Live or even Traktor 2 can do. CD players are dead and buried now. Even Pioneer have come round to that fact, due to them releasing quite a few midi controllers now, i'd say. i've not used that Aza, so cant comment, i'm still using Traktor Pro and a Vestax VCI 100, but i've got ableton, and the temptation to sell up and get an Akai APC40 is appealing to me more and more...

<p>i caught bits of this at work on the ol' meat wagon doing city centre stuff. It was shocking tbh. Some okayish tracks in there, but when you compare this to say, Tong (who i think STILL leads Radio 1's dance shows), the level of quality is just miles apart. Tong is on the pulse (still) and can foresee trends etc, Jules just plays for the masses now. I dont know who filters Tongs tracks for him or whether he picks them himself, but Jules is missing too many tricks here, i think he needs to vet the tunes himself as i suspect Tong does. Sad to see that this is the way Jules has gone.</p>

I'm on Ableton Live 8. I'm slowly getting there. I'm just trying to understand how everything is put together and how everything works. I must admit though, i do enjoy it and it is fun!

i regularly clean mine. i'm a PC guy so i've got into that routine. I want a new laptop, i'm looking at a Samsung laptop. I'm just not feeling mac's. I play out using my win 7 pc and i have no problems with it crashing or whatever.

all of the above is why i like tech/minimal house now. Because there's no snobbery attached to it. The best nights we had in Ibiza this year were, to be honest, hearing the no name dj's playing tracks that no one else was playing. What i think has contributed to the "stuck in a loop" scene is, old records being remixed time, and time again. Because they are anthems already, people already know them, so its easier for them to become big tunes and for producers to get their names out there, and ultimately gigs. I mean, whats number one right now on beatport? FLG's "So Much Love". A track 8 years old when it was done by Bangalter. The scenes cant progress if there are no new records and styles being explored. The ass kissing must do your head in though, and the voting, well i dont even take notice of that anymore, its just a way for DJMag to get there name out there and sell copies.

for me it has to be Clubbers guide to 2000. It just summed up Jules' sound back then so well. I particularly like the first CD where it was funky and banging. Perfect. When you listen to this, you can really hear how dance has changed over the years. Tracks back then were just simple dancefloor tracks. Now people try to amaze with awesome prodcution techniques. I remember buying this when it came out too. Always takes me back, this CD does. followed by Tranceformer 2000. The latter really got me into trance and it was the first time i ever really heard a lot of Picotto tracks, as he mixed one CD. Lange did the other. Again, this was late 1999, and i remember my life at the time i bought this. It had a lot of more underground tunes on it that Jules missed at the time. I think it was the first CD to really open my eyes and show me that commercial tracks are not where its at.

Just listened to this show again as the file was laying around on the desktop, what a show this is. It was unusual for Jules to play this funky throughout, but he used to do it so well. I'm desperate to know the track Unknown "The World". I remember when i listened back in the day, this track and its one of those annoying tunes you love, but never know the full details of it. Jules hammered quite a bit in the day,.

The guy who played after me on friday night used a simple laptop>Audio 2 soundcard>Pioneer DJM 500 combo. He just synced everything! It sounded good but there was no risk involved in it

I'm getting into production and am using Ableton as my DAW. I think the djing is all done in the session view, there is a crossfader in there and i think most people use a Novation controller to trigger samples. Its not djing as in the conventional way. Personally, i stick with a Vestax VCi 100 Mk2 controller and Traktor 2. Its easy, solid and works.

as far as the westend places go - and i'm not mad keen, i think we enjoyed Capones is the best. Though it is small.

Gold N Delicious, what a tune that is. Probably Lange's best remix, why on earth this was never released is beyond me.
