I think the harsh reality is that urban music is now more popular than dance music.

I have tried to think of reasons why Radio 1 would change the schedule this way and I am struggling. I believe that Urban Music was more popular than dance around 2002-2005 but since last year, Dance Music has without a doubt experienced a resurgence in popularity and I think it's now the No.1 choice for punters who go out on a Saturday night for some drinking and dancing!

I am just so shocked by this.........................................................

All I can think is that perhaps with Jules being an international DJ and maybe not being able to commit to as many " audience participation Saturdays'" as they would like this would make it easier just to pre record his shows.

Also, dance anthems @ 2300.I know it is Dave Pearce but that has always been the end of the weekend, it just doesn't sit right and again surely the audience participation they some much desire will be gone from that show too, everyone will be out clubbing by then??????????????????????????????????????????

As KSheenan said, no more live Saturday gigs!!!!!

I just hope that his show will be like the old friday nights, they were storming..... please be 2 hours of pure banging trance with at least a 45 min mix that would be good and more than anything bring back the live shows every 2 weeks that would make this all so much better.

I wonder if Jules is happy with all of this?

Radio 1 have officially lost the plot. They need to go & sit under a tree & think about what they've done!

:o I'm gutted cos l listen to Jules's show every week as l don't often go out on a sat night so l'm really going to miss it. :( :angry

I won't be listening in to Annie Mac that's for sure.

It would be great to hear from Jules on this and perhaps gain an insight behind this change of schedule and how he feels about it etc.

From a radio presenter's point of view:-

Good points

  • JK & Joel gone in favour of a local radio presenter they've sourced - good to see they don't only hire celebrities
  • Vernon Kay loses one of his two awful weekend shows
  • Moyles gets an extra half an hour - although I think he should start at 6 like us commercial radio breakfast jocks!

BUT

Bad points

  • Urban music taking over even more than it has been for the last 12 months - and now taking full control of the "going out" slots
  • Radio 1 are somehow still gaining listeners but only slightly, and I think when the next RAJAR figures come out in October, there'll be some interesting results
  • Dance music being sidelined, and as good as wiped off the schedule. It seems strange that they were very very pro-interaction with their dance shows 6 months ago - and seemingly now they're the opposite!
  • d*** and Dom getting a radio show
  • Kelly Osbourne getting a radio show

An absolute travesty. Can't wait to see what Jules has to say.

Can't stand these two anyway. A right couple of tossers.

Vernon Kay loses one of his two awful weekend shows

Again, can't stand this loud mouthed ass who seems to base everything around "I'm Vernon Kay, from BOLTON". Think's he's Peter Kay or something.

d*** and Dom getting a radio show

Someones having a laugh here. These two need thrashing with a stocking full of wet sh*t. Probably very amusing to small children when they're throwing gunge over each other but on 'grown up's' radio?

Kelly Osbourne getting a radio show

Don't get this at all. So she's the daughter of a rock legend and has attempted a singing career but why does that qualify her as a presenter? I can see this being a very cringe-worthy show.

This a massive step backwards for Radio 1. Godknows who has been let loose with the schedule organisation. It must be some old bloke who thinks d*** & Dom are cool and that black music is 'hip'.

Since I started my current job Ive stopped listening to R1 altogether due to being too tired or busy doing stuff and as I havent had the net for a good month no chance of listen again.

It still hasnt sunk in and wont really how stupid this new schedule is.

Nice to see everyones views on this that overall is proper censored.

Am I the only one that thinks this is a great move by Radio 1?

It wasn't that long ago we were saying that Radio 1's current random schedule of Urban in between dance shows didn't work, and how much it affected Jules's show because he had to start off with funky nonsense to try to keep those urban listeners tuned in.

As from October, there will be an independant urban schedule, and an independant dance schedule meaning that the dance DJ's can concentrate on their "natural" style rather than having to focus on keeping listeners from the previous show.

Jules is given a later slot - meaning that he'll play a more banging selection - just like the days of old. No more irritating randoms phoning in telling us where they're going clubbing that night, and no 50,000 guestlist competitions either. It'll be solid music for 2 hours. It also means we'll get to hear more live club sets, and we should hear sets from all of the festivals too. It also means that when he's out in America, because of the time difference there, he should still be able to broadcast live from the Sirius radio studios (as he does occasionally), rather than pre-recording them. Remember, Radio 1 don't like too many pre-recorded sets - hence why they gave Danny Rampling the boot (he wanted to record more sets) - so i've no doubt that Radio 1 will have thought this through and will be giving Jules more live sets from clubs.

I think Dance Anthems is on a bit too late though to work. Most people will be out clubbing when that show is on, so they'll lose some of the listeners interaction. Personally, I think that would work better from 9pm til 11pm, with Annie Mac's show being swapped with Eddie Halliwell's - giving us Dave Pearce from 9pm til 11pm, Eddie Halliwell from 11pm to 1am, and Jules from 1am til 3am, followed by the Essential Mix. That, to me, would have worked very well. Hopefully though, with Dave Pearce being on at 11pm til 1am, he might also just have the opportunity to play some live sets on air. In my opinion, its about time Dave was given freedom to play some live sets on Radio 1 - he's been outstanding at all three festivals i've seen him at this year (far better than Jules!) - so he deserves the opportunity to show people that there's more to him than the cheesy side that people associate him with. Dave Pearce plays very credible Trance in his club sets - and he doesn't get the chance to show that on Radio 1.

I can't understand why so many of you think its bad. For the first time in years, its looking likely that we'll get to hear Jules playing live club sets, we get to hear a flowing dance schedule too with no random Urban music sandwiched in-between shows, and we get to hear Jules playing his trademark, more popular, banging style.

To me, its all good! I just feel that Annie Mac is out of place - and Eddie Halliwell would have fit in better. That then, would have been pretty much, the perfect line up for me.

Tong 7 til 9

Dave Pearce 9 til 11

Eddie Halliwell 11 til 1

Jules 1 til 3

Essential Mix - 3 til 5

Yes please, i'd have some of that

Over the last 4-5 years, Jules's shows have slowly been changed from a specialist dance music show to more of a dance-anthems-esque listener interaction show. I feel his new time slot will reinstate Jules's show as a specialist show for showcasing new music again :D

what i cant quite work out though, is i thought Radio 1's sister station 1Xtra catered for 24/7 black music? if people want to hear urban stuff on the weekend then why dont they listen to that? It seems pointless have an black music station when the mother station ALSO plays more urban music than anything else? or is that just me?

I thought the whole reason for setting 1xtra up was so that could cater for urban and R1 support rock/indie/pop with dancier stuff at the weekend. Just seems very odd this new lineup.

Throwing in Annie Mac at 9pm on Friday night in between Tong and Dance Anthems.... I'm not sure about this!

Everything on that Friday night is on a touch too late - but remove her and you have:

Tong at 7

Dangerous at 9

Jules at 11pm

E-mix at 1am

Annie Nightingale at 3am

Which I don't think is that bad at all. Annic Mac already has 3 hours on a Sunday....

I have to agree with Briggsy here, but at the same time we await the format of the new show with baited breath... fingers crossed.

traills idea would have worked so much better. I wouldnt have actually had a problem if it was like that. It seems Annie Mac is rather "getting in the way". She seems a little shoehorned in on a friday night methinks. She's the one who i have a real problem with. Nothing against her, i just dont like her show at all. BUT she must be doing something right as she's on twice over the weekend...must be features like "north, east, south, west...who knows how to party best" or whatever it is....

The only reason Annie Mac is there on a friday, in my opinion, is to add variation. If they'd put Eddie there instead, then it would have been 6 hours of Trance with Eddie, Pearce and Jules.

Instead, they've put Annie Mac in who is different from all of the other DJ's - she brings something different. With Jules being the most versatile of all the DJ's, it makes sense for him to be on before the Essential Mix because he'll adapt his set to work towards the DJ on the Essential Mix. For example, if its Roger Sanchez on the E-Mix, then Jules will work towards House, if its Armin, then Jules will work towards Trance - and if its Dave Clarke, then Jules will end towards Techno. It makes sense really.

I still think this is the best dance shake-up since Jules lost his Friday show and Rampling left his Saturday show. That was when the dance shows went downhill, and they've continued to go downhill ever since. Hopefully this will finally make the dance schedule good again :D

Briggsy: I think everyone would be in agreement with you in that we would all be super-keen to see Jules playing more like his suited style i.e. trance! It will be a benefit for the show to dump the stupid cut-up boys who were a [slight] novelty at 1st but are now just boring and same'ish.

The main grumble here is that Jules has been slotted into a time at which most of us can't listen live and that we're loosing the ability to listen to the dude when getting ready to go out. Personally I'd rather shove pins in my eyes than listen to urban music when getting ready.

I think it remains to be seen as to whether Jules will actually get more live shows and for anyone to say that he will just because his show is later is just pure speculation.

I think that this is just a bit of culture change for people in that Saturdays (Jules) and Sundays (Dave P) have become a way of life and to have that changed in such a way is disheartening. :(

Whilst I accept that change is inevitable, I don't feel that this new schedule will actually result in more listeners. Although I do take on points that tuneage will improve, especially with a reduction in features.

So, my head thinks that realistically it is a good idea, but my heart says no, lol, for 2 nostalgic reasons...

1) There was no better way to get ready to go out than to listen to Judge Jules.

2) There was no better way to round off the weekend than to listen to Dance Anthems and the trance orientated mix.

Looks like i'll have to invest in a timer-equipped recording device..
