I've well and truly lost faith....

It's quite a touchy subject - I think we're all grown up enough on here to sort it out amicably though... if people still disagree, they can still be included in the artist field or something, rather than the author of the mashup, and I'm ahppy to reflect this in the tracklistings :)

I've had an email about "breathin drill" in particular and am looking into it.

I'm not suggesting he's doing anything wrong mate - as a DJ, he could be very good, and i'm sure he's a decent chap with it :D

Bootleg-wise though, I just don't think they're up to much. The one he did with Fred Baker & Youri Parker's 'Bang' earlier in the year, with the vocal over the top from a tune I can't remember the name of just now, was supurb - but other than that, the rest, in my opinion, are fairly average. I don't see what purpose this Adam K and Soha tune with the vocals from Candi Staton over the top really achieve. The vocal doesn't fit the tune very well, and any Tom, d*** and Harry could do that live in a set with an accapella and the tune - it doesn't really need a bootleg to create that effect. It just seems like an easy way to get some publicity, with very little creativity.

Some people are very creative with bootlegs (you, for example, have done a series of good bootlegs which take two original tracks and turn them into something new - particularly Sosei Fiction) - I don't feel that Nick Callaghan's have done that though.

Of course, that's just my opinion though - others may agree, others will disagree. Thats the best thing about the dance music scene - we all have different tastes. If we all had the same tastes and opinions, it'd be a very small and boring scene.

Ma ears are burnen up once again  ......

Not one for heavy discussions on forums but I thought I had to get my oar in, so to speak;

A think ur bang on matey on the 'Jules at Godskitchen' note, back pedaling to fit a few slower tracks in after bangen it out from the word go is 'Fuc%*en unacceptable' in my opinion. A would of been a bit frustrated at that one aswell  (even if it was my bootleg he spun).

On the note of bootlegs man, I don't take them tooo seriously....after all they are just f&*%en bootlegs man. But a do them for three reasons;

1. Obviously to get ma name out there. As long as u get permission from the artists who originally made the tracks in the first place, a don't think there is anything wrong with tryen to make a name for yourself by giving ur bootlegs to the likes of Tong & Jules etc. It seems to have worked for me to a certain degree & I ain't gonna' be maken any apoligies for that one!!

2. Any bootlegs I've done in the last 8 months, I have made on a sequencer & this has gave me the oppurtunity to get to grips with s***loads of software. It's been a good stepping stone for me to move onto maken my own productions in which I'm sinken my teeth into now.

3. A lot of DJ's tryen to claw there way into the scene, who are into a similar style as myself seem to spin the same tunes these days, so maken your own take on certain tracks helps keep some individuality in your mixes & might help your mix stand out from the rest. This has seemed to work for me to a degree aswell.

As for the 'Twilight love' bootleg; it didn't take me long to do, but it wasn't just a case of throwen the acapella over the track either mate. The arrangement of the vocal had to be changed, I used a sampler to get a loop effect & theres a good few other FX in there aswell. When u mention that the vocal doesnt fit the track atall, as u say mate, thats your opinion & no doubt a lot of other folk share yer opinion, which is cool man. Afterall I kinda' commercialised an excellent track which was fine without the vocal, fair enough man, a thought that maself to be honest. A obviously think they do fit well together or a wouldn't of made it in the first place....the vocal is on the same key as the synth line in 'Twilight' & I thought that the pattern of the track sat well with the vocal. I have had good feedback from Adam K & Soha & loads more DJ's includen' Pete tong & Judge jules, so the opinions on it are varied. The only opinions a really take on board are the ones coming from the artists themselves, if they're happy, am happy.

Al be hangen up ma Bootlegs for the time being anyways, just finished ma final 2 last week, so it'll be ma own material from now on, unless a get a sudden bootleg itch! So that mite please a few folk on this forum no doubt ;)

Rant over, ma dinners fuc&%n freezen now!! :P

Cheers, Nick!

No worries mate! As I mentioned earlier, its just my own personal opinion - it wasn't an attack at you personally. My gripe was at Jules generally for playing too many bootlegs, which, again, in my opinion, aren't club standard.

My comment about the Adam K & Soha track was mainly because its a fairly 'underground' Trancer, with a commercial vocal over the top - and I still feel that they don't really suit each other - again though, its just an opinion and not a gripe at you as a person. Even my favourite producers come up with something now and again that I hate - it doesn't mean i've suddenly turned on them. Thats not my style.

I do think your Fred Baker & Youri Parker bootleg was top drawer though - that one worked really well :D

Good to see you've not taken it too personally and started ranting and raving though. I can guarantee that if I'd made a similar comment about the work of someone from the Godskitchen or official Judge Jules message board then i'd have been called every name under the sun.

Thats why I like this site - opinions are always respected and nobody takes offence. If you say other comments on some other boards, then world war three breaks out.

An excellent explanatory reply there Nick, another member a pleasure to have aboard, i hope you stay around with the helpful info on those id's too!

Cheers.

Back on topic, Jules mentioend this is in his diary report..

The final outing covered by this instalment was to God’s Kitchen in Birmingham on Saturday 24th. Since GK moved to being a monthly event I only play there a couple of times per year, and it was a complete sell out. The line-up was particularly strong- Marco V, Sander Van Doorn and myself, although Marco was forced to cancel on the day due to illness. God’s Kitchen in full swing is one of the finest trance propositions anywhere in the world, and I recorded my set for inclusion on the site as the ‘Nov mix’. Since I’ve started using my edirol mp3 recorder there are no limitations to the length of set that can be recorded- previously I was confined to 80 minute cdrs. With quite a few mates on the guest list I turned up an hour before starting to share a drink or two. GK’s dj booth is very large and accommodates plenty of buddies- a lesson in booth design and ergonomics, where socially active dj’s like yours truly are concerned. Keep em large.

Suppose that could go some way to explaining what you mentioned Carl? Will have to give the Nov mix a listen & compare to the Oct one Ken?

Yeah, possibly mate! Perhaps a few too many disco beverages before set. I suspect the additional vodka he drank during his set pushed him a little over the edge, which would suggest why he started so promising, and then went downhill so rapidly after that.

This mix will be 10x worse than the October mix - guaranteed. Definately the worst Jules set i've ever heard :(

my two cents, re: Jules @ Godskitchen on Saturday:

Personally, I thought Jules was on top form, after how disappointing he was at Crasher's 14th Birthday in the main arena anyway. Although I didn't stick around to hear Sander van Doorns set, I can't say who played best of the night.

If he backpedalled his set, I really didn't notice!

Briggsy - If I'd have know you were heading to Gods I'd have said we could have met up to say hi. Maybe next time.

Someone should email the link to this topic to Jules - he likes getting feedback good or bad.

I always thought he wasn't keen on message boards

Its easy to go on a forum and slag a DJ off for a bad set, but how often do people go on and congratulate a good set? (Certainly to the extent and length that a 'rant' thread goes on) We all have bad days at work and can't be 100% all the time.

However, I do agree that the excessive filtering is annoying B)

I set up a dedicated "DJ Gold Stars" section on my forum specifically to praise DJ's - it nice to see how many do contribute now that the section is there to encourage them.

I always give good feedback where appropriate, and negative where appropriate too. Unfortunately, I really didn't feel Jules's set at all on Saturday - the excessive looping and random dodgy scratching spoilt a set - plus the dip where it seemed to go calm.

However, in the past, i've given Jules loads of credit too - particularly the BCM opening party in 2004, which was on eof the best ever sets i've ever heard from Jules - in fact, from any DJ at all.

Jules has always had his off days - but I know for sure that one day, he'll pull off a stunning set that'll blow me away again. He always does. WHen Jules has an off day, he really is off - but when he has a good day, he's fecking superb! :D

That is true, you can go on DSI and find people slagging Jules off (and other dj's) left right and centre.

I rarely go on and slag DJ's off on message boards, if I don't enjoy it, I'll say I couldn't get into it and leave it at that. I'd much rather talk about how good a xxx DJ's set was. Especially to people that weren't there! haha

If people just go on message boards to slag DJ's off and say how much they didn't enjoy a night, why do they continually bother to see them and why are they even still going out if it's so s***?
