Westwood was a straight up legend on the phone wasnt he. He is, as the Londoners say "pure jokes".

Another week another stupid mashup. This time its Sander Van Doorn with Coldplay welded to it, and you guessed it, its s***! why Jules, WHY!?!

Other than that not bad, except lol at Jules not remembering that John Dahlback tune...

Yeah Coldplay & SVd doiesnt work very well.

Bootlegs wise Zuluu Chaos was great and also Pitch & Putt.

Kilimanjaro and Impossible were my fave two, the Mansun remix, wlel the version above & beyond playedsounded better than this-obviously jule's edit.

Westwood makes me laugh, for pure coolness I think Eastwood drops it like its hot yall mean B)

I am not a fan of the Coldplay bootleg that was played. I think it has potential but this particular version has not been made to the best it can be.

All this talk of Jules playing too many bootlegs worries the hell out of me though. Its easy to notice a lot of the bootlegs that Jules plays get criticised (even I myself have just criticised one lol), but in the back of my head I get the feeling that there are hundreds of people slating mine also. The idea of Jules playing too many bootlegs worries me further because I want to stop making them now (purely for the negativity of them now), but I want to stop on a high note ... so I would like my new bootleg to do better than what FTNY did and so far the situation looks bleak :(

I have noticed many opportunities that my new bootleg could have been played, and if Im fully honest I think its better than some of the bootlegs that do actually get played. I feel very nieve and boastful for saying that but its probably best to let it out lol. Its either Jules doesnt actually like it, its not actually been made very well, or its just damn right awful and I have a clouded mind.

i think it depends on how well the mashup is made, and the creativeness that goes into it. This SVD/Coldplay one "clashes" too much. It would have been better if the coldplay sample was an accapella. For example, the mashup Dirty South made using Pryda's "Muranyi" and the accapella from Julie McKnight "Diamond Life" is quite frankly, superb. Because he's thought about it. The marriage of vocal and instrumental is cleverly worked. The end result is a fantastic tune.

The type of mashup jules tends to play are horrible ones which have been thrown together in 5 minutes. It usually tends to be the more mainstream ones he plays. When i first heard your bootlegs Simon, i didnt realise they were bootlegs. I quite like the W-Unit "Be the bass" one aswell. It's cleverly worked and uses good parts from each tune they borrow from.

That 7 Nation Army booty jules played not long ago was absolutely awful though. Jules also falls down by playing so many bootlegs. One every now and again is nice. I really used to be into mashups. I think the best one ever is still the Stardust vs. Madonna "Music on holiday" one from 1998 though, by the Stuntmasterz. Sheer genius.

I used to love it when Jules had The Cut-Up Boys do a few minutes at the start of his shows. I suppose in a way they pushed me to try it out myself in the end. I used to enjoy their Mash-Up compilations for MOS aswell but, much like Clubland, its gone a bit chavtastic for my liking.

Without realising, I think FTNY has been my best. I dont actually like it too much though which is why it has suprised me. A lot of my other works impress me more though and have a harder sound which I prefer but I guess they have not been put into action with much care, they probably come across as 'complicated' as someone once described them. FTNY was only whipped up in a few minutes though because I notice the name worked well lol.

Be The Bass works perfectly, its not been overcooked and it all pans out very smoothly which is why I understand its proven to be very popular for the radio. Many of my bootlegs arent quite like it either.

I was Westwood's biggest hatter, and i still hate his music and sayings. But by chance i bumped into him in a Hotel about a year ago and i was shocked at what i truely nice guy he was. Had a sit down and a good chat with him and he even bought me a drink, was a true gent.

Yeah Paul himself mentioned that on another Thread, he sent Jules two tracks and this was on the b-side, so for some reason Jules is calling it b-side! :D:lol:

Yes l saw that thread, Paul must have emailed Jules the correct name (Cut Off) because Jules has named it correctly on his 2 previous shows but for some reason he has reverted back to calling it "B Side"

I'm all for a good bootleg if they're made well. Jules has played some crackers over the years. Jules can do a whole show full of bootlegs if they're good, and I won't mind, but the trouble is, he's playing a huge amount that sound very amateur indeed.

The worst i've heard was one around 6 months ago - it was Alex Morph & Rank 1's 'Life Less Ordinary' with the vocal from Delerium - Silence over the top. Not only did it sound bad, but the vocal wasn't even in time. Another one that was dire was by Digital Deviant (who churns out tones of crap bootlegs) and it features Paul Webster - Blindside, with the vocal from Warrior - Warrior over the top. Again, it was a load of crap. Then there was that horrendous Samba 69. Don't get me started on that.

I wouldn't even play half of those in a set in my bedroom, yet they're being played on Radio 1, which is a worrying thought.

Simon - from the bootlegs of yours i've heard, I don't think you've got anything to worry about - you've done some good work on them. AJS is another who has handed out some good bootlegs to Jules. Digital Deviant, apart from Monotone Devil, has churned out nothing but crap.

Bootlegs really are very hit & miss, but I always think they're a novelty. You play them to surprise people & to get that reaction when they realise it's a new version of a track they know or two tracks fused together. I generally only play a couple every now & then as I feel it lessens the impact with a whole host of them played together

I used to hate their mix at the beginning of Jules's shows!! Arrrrrrrgh!!!! :o :o It was very clever how they fitted in all those tune in 5 or 10 minutes but for me, Jules is a specialist DJ and I felt it was minutes wasted where a new tune or two could have been aired. However, if it inspired you to make a good bootleg, I guess something good finally came out of it :)

A totally agree with you there mate, thats the reason I still throw the odd one together from time to time, its always good to keep your sets fresh & unique, bootlegs are a good way of doin' so. So many DJ's are playing the same tunes these days, so to have your own take on popular tracks at the time is always a bonus.

A got a copy of this 'Violet hill' bootleg aswell. I happen to think its quite good, but we all have our opinions I suppose. The Keys on the Coldplay track fit the PADs of Sanders breaks perfectly which helps it blend in nicely. The vocal over the drums doesn't work well in my opinion (I'll be editing that part right away), apart from that a think it's cleverly done. I heard Jules play it at Coloursfest at the weekend & it went down a storm. I think it is the type of bootleg that works well on big sound systems. A think the same goes for that 'White stripes vs. Plastic dreams' mashup Jules made; Listening to that on monitors at home didn't sound great & I didn't think it worked atall, but after hearing him play it at Coloursfest, I found myself boppen away to it, so I eat my words. It might not be the prettiest bootleg to listen to, but at the end of the day it got a good reaction with the crowd & went down well on the outdoor stage, as to did the 'Fratellis' mashup. Not everyone who goes to clubs etc. to see the big DJ's are as intouch with the music as some of of us so sometimes playing a familiar track that everyone can relate to goes along way in a set & so bootlegs are a good way of maken this happen. Am sure Ken sheehan & Will atkinson would agree with me as they were boppen away to it aswell on Saturday, if they would admit that or not is another matter, lol.

As for the 'Samba69' tune, in my opinion I thought that was good. Fair play to Kimmo for releasing that. His bootleg of 'Abel ramos's' track got massive support so why not make it his own & take some credit for it.

Because its s***! :P

His original bootleg of Abel Ramos with the Josh Wink sample was well done, but Samba 69 was absolutely dire! Thats a perfect example of a bootleg that should not be made.

Ach well, we all have our seperate opinions. A thought it deserved a release myself. A did prefare the 'Abel ramos' bootleg to it though.

I think it's a shame, the amount of stick which has been generated around remixing and bootlegging classics. Maybe indeed main riffs aren't as anthemic as they used to be, but to be honest, I'd be sick of them by now if they were. I think what's overlooked is that basslines, percussion and subtle fx are a hell of a lot better now than they were around the 'golden era'. Tunes these days have got more 'shuffle' in them and are better structured. Some of the bootlegs are admittedly a bit shabby to say the least, but the bootlegs I've heard live like Durand's Audio Bullys one and Jules' Fratellis one have gone down really well. Combinin an anthemic lead with a funky twisted drop can really work and I think its healthy to see the Trance industry trying stuff like this out. At least it hasn't gone all minimal! :P
