Judge Jules to leave Radio 1.

You can't say it wasn't coming with the wave of dubstep and Radio 1 turning more & more into a pre-teen station. But it's still made me sad:-

http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/latestnews/071211radio1.html

These changes mean that Judge Jules, Gilles Peterson, Kissy Sell Out, Fabio & Grooverider will be leaving Radio 1 next year.

Ben added: "We’d like to thank Jules, Gilles and Fabio & Grooverider for over a decade of hard work and commitment to music at Radio 1, and also to Kissy Sell Out his contribution over the last three years. All are incredibly talented and we wish them the very best for the future.’’

Judge Jules said: "I’ve had an incredible time over the last 14 years at Radio 1. I’m going to continue DJ’ing and I’m having a bit of a career change - I’m off to become an Entertainment Lawyer at Sheridans."

It looks like Jules' trance show is getting replaced with a dubstep show. The end of an era for Trance on Radio 1 as well as Jules.

Just read about this on facebook - shocked that they have axed him (but maybe not totally surprised).

I have to say that while I am a little sad I got tired of the show a while back - but I'd still prefer it to bloody dubstep!

i find the chances of me listening to radio 1 at all in a years time very very slim. but i'm more worried about trance being forgotten, especially those tracks from the golden era. as i said above nobody will be playing trance on radio 1 anymore.

Not overly surprised really and i've been saying on here for a while that I thought Jules would be the next victim of a Radio 1 schedule shake up.

He's a legend - and he played a massive part in my DJ'ing/clubbing interest - but at the same time, he's been past his best for a while. Time to move on.

Hopefully, with his departure from Radio 1, it'll mean that he's playing music that he enjoys - not music that he feels he should be playing to appeal to everyone.

His sets have been dire for a long time, so hopefully, we'll see the end of the T&D mash-ups, horrific bootlegs, and cheesy crap - and he'll focus on good quality club-standard tunes again.

Sad to see fab & groove go, they are hilarious with their between music banter, I think I'll stop listening when Friction takes over.

Trance is hardly the flavour right now whereas dubstep seems to be so not surprise to see Jules go but 2 hours of dubstep after Tong? okay.....,

Never quite understood how Kissy got his own stand alone show

very good point. his knowledge of the golden era if you like in trance and some house is wealthy, especially as he was pinnacle in the years where it was at it's biggest. hopefully he'll do some sort of podcast or go somewhere where he can play the tracks that everyone remembers him for. as for playing out he should do what scott bond did and play the classics from the big era.

Sad to see because of all the fond memories I have of Jules being such a part of Radio1, but not unexpected really. I'm sure even Jules would have to admit that. I had a train of thought that Jules was playing a lot of the chart bootlegs etc, to angle for a more mainstream show if the axe were to fall, but it seems that's not the case.

Thanks for all the brilliant memories, Jules, but everyone has a shelf-life at somewhere like Radio1. In fact I'd say he's done very well to last as long as he has, with the dwindling popularity in trance, and emergence of other dance styles. That's something anyone would be proud of.

Was Jules expecting this?

On just 6th December 2011 I had a mailing from Full On Ferry and Jules was interviewed:

In it he says:

And tell us about your Friday night BBC Radio 1 radio show?

I’m proud to host the only show on Radio 1 showcasing trance. Trance is a massive genre with such a loyal following, and being its representative on Radio 1 is a role that I take very seriously.

Anyway it is a sad day. I haven't listened to Jules religiously for close to 10 years now but I am forever thankful and loyal to him as a DJ for his tremendous moments of musical genius during 98-2001.

Thanks for the memories, sir, and hats off to a tremendous stint at Radio 1.

Not sure how much truth is in it, but i've seen it from several people online stating that Jules is set to announce his retirement from DJ'ing completely and is going into Entertainment Law.

All online rumours, but with Jules's law background, his expertise and knowledge of the clubbing industry, his decline in popularity (and reduced bookings) at the 'specialist' big clubs like Godskitchen, Gatecrasher, etc - and now the loss of a previously guaranteed annual salary from Radio 1, it wouldn't seem too surprising.

Very sad.... not sure how else to respond to this. Sure it's been in the cards for a while, but still. And even though I haven't heard Jules' show on a regular basis the past few years, it's something I could always tune in to on a friday night to hear a familiar voice no matter the tunes. Sad, very sad.

Also it's hard to believe Fabio and Grooverider is going. That duo is legendary and is somewhat the definition of Drum'n Bass on radio for me.

I imagine with the vast wealth he must have acrued that financially he will be able to do as he pleases - plus with his contact list he'll be a smash as a lawyer.

Hopefully he carries on DJing for his own ends, rather than becomming a Dave Pearce-style Luminar regular.

It'd be great to hear him making a concerted effort to go more underground again - I still think he could unearth some great music without the needless R1 worries of linking various shows and pandering to casual listeners

it's down to the fact that the radio 1 management seem to be shortening their age range all the time for the station. i first noticed this happening in 2004 when mark & lard left and they replaced them with colin & edith, a show blatently aimed at people under 20. now it's all about celebs and gossip in the day (hence why i don't listen) with b-list celebs like fearne cotton. i think even kelly osbourne had a stint at radio 1 at one time.

the real beggining was moving and eventually getting rid of dance anthems in 2007/8. some may call it cheesy but i actually miss dave pearce on sunday nights, it's hardly like switch took off in it's place either. the radio 1 management seemed to have been ill advised and are putting all their focus on dubstep, a genre which will have it's day and burn out like 4x4 did before a few years ago. pete tong is next in line without a doubt.

I think the initial decline started as early as when Radio 1 made the decision to sack Danny Rampling and also when they cut live club/festival broadcasts. Seb Fontaine never really worked out, Fergie started off well, but then his sound changed and didn't really suit mainstream radio - plus Phil Kieran seemed to be 'guest' every week and the show became very predictable. Eddie took a long time to settle and only really hit the potential to become Jules's successor about 9 months before he left.

Dance Anthems was ideal for a Sunday evening, and Dave Pearce has a natural radio voice.

Personally, I always preferred Jules Friday show much more than the Saturday show too. The Friday show always represented Jules's club style and had less speech - whereas the Saturday show had more speech, more gimmick features, and always started off Housey (which wasn't Jules's main club style).

Anyway, back on topic, it is now public that Jules is becoming a lawyer...

Was just coming in to say I'd read an article on Sky's text service, but it's word for word what's in that article, same headline as well. In the showbiz section.

I actually noticed the other day, weirdly, that Jules had put a pic up on twitter saying something like, 'ready to go on Radio1 again', and a pic of him posing beside a Radio 1 sign, and thought to myself 'That's weird for him to put a pic like that up. We all know where he works'. I'll try post it. May be just co-incidence, but it did strike me as odd at the time. https://twitter.com/#!/RealJudgeJules/media/slideshow?url=pic.twitter.com%2FzcPXtyt1

I'd say Jules will be taking this quite badly myself. The words in that article from R1 about needing to bring in new sounds to keep the younger listeners happy, will sting with him in particular (as they would anyone really), as I think he made a concious effort to try and appeal to younger listeners (thus alienating a lot of us) for the sake of his show with the more commercial sounds.

I suspect he's had an idea for a while that his time would be coming to an end sooner rather than later knowing that Radio 1 have been slowly removing the older presenters from the radio 1 schedule over the past few years - plus the fact that Radio 1 had reduced Pete Tongs show (the 'safest' dance show on Radio 1) signalled that none of the dance shows were safe (particularly when Dance Anthems, which out of all the dance shows, was the one more suited towards the age range of listener that Radio 1 are trying to appeal to).

Its been clear for the past 2-3 years that Dance music isn't as valuable to Radio 1 as it once was - this was evident when dance music was removed from the schedule completely on Saturdays, and replaced with urban music - and even more so since Radio 1 shared some of its airtime with 1xtra - hence the introduction of Dumbstep.

Personally though, regardless of whether Radio 1 had brought in Dubstep or not, I still think Jules would have gone within the next 12 months anyway. Simply because Radio 1 want younger presenters - plus Jules's decline in popularity in the UK. The reality is, ten years ago, up to around 5 years ago was a headline DJ and could fill a club just with his name on a line-up. These days, at places like Passion, Godskitchen and the Ministry of Sound, Jules is now just a support DJ.

He's had an amazing Radio 1 career - and, sadly, i'm sure we'll never see another club or radio personality like Jules. He's a genuine legend and single-handedly launched many producers/DJs careers years ago such as Fabio Stein, Michael Woods, Paul Masterson - and many many more. Even thought Jules has said he's going to continue DJ'ing, its inevitable that with his new career as a lawyer, his gig diary is going to be much lighter due to other work commitments - so I think that the Queen should honour his achievements, services, and commitment to helping new artists, by awarding him an MBE, at least, when she's considering her new years honours.

radio 1 seem to want to phase out dance music completley, sounds a little brutal. but if you think about it, artists like michael gray, tom novy, ferry corsten, ernesto & bastian, eric prydz etc. artists who's tracks were being played on jules' show a few months before got onto the radio 1 playlist as little as 3 years ago.

now in contrast look at todays playlist. can you see - if any, tracks you could class as dance music?

Yeah big up to Julesy, been a large part of my life for a long time, practically the soundtrack to it, and to so many others, responsible for bringing so many amazing records and artists to the forefront and inspiring many a bedroom DJ and many professional DJ's of today.

Thankyou for the music Jules, and all the kindness you've shown to me.

I have to say I wholeheartedly agree with the last paragraph of Briggsy's last post, Jules really does deserve some recognition for all his work, not just his very long radio 1 career which in itself is a great achievement.

When's the book?

i'd really like to see him play some of the older stuff for his last few shows or so, stuff he wants to play. bollocks to the radio 1 management and the 16 year old tinie tempah fans, he's leaving anyway so he may as well go out in style.
