lyndon
Ah, I know we all reminisce for Jules time back in the day on Radio1, but the whole station was just so much better back then. I used to really like Moyles at times then, it was as much about the other people on his show, as him, and it was great at times. All preceded by the inimitable Mark and Lard. Geniuses. Complete with their 'Non-Essential Selection' every Friday. The only bit I wasn't fussed on all day was Sara Cox in the mornings, though I think it was a lot to do with Radio1 wanting her to play up to the 'ladette' image that was all the rage at the time. so many people share that view, including myself, even the imaging of the station was far better. and mark and lard, genius. their classic cuts on 'mint vinyl' had tears streaming out my eyes. mint condition! :- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3LNQjMNhs4 sadly now it's just full of celebrity obsessions, dullness and 'yes men'. i mean could you imagine something like the above on radio 1 in this day and age? even chris moyles is restricted compared to his old afternoon show. Number2Fan
Times change though. Radio one isn't aimed at you anymore! I mean I used to love listening to Noel Edmonds in the morning, then Simon Mayo, I'd tape the top 40 and have the record / pause listen to Annie Nightingale's request show. Simon Bates's golden hour and our tune, I went to Radio 1 roadshows, times move on.
lyndon
i am still 24, i was just into trance/house very early. most people my age i know don't listen to radio 1, so they are going wrong somewhere. and besides, there is a big gap between the radio 1 and radio 2 age range's. people 30 are too old for radio 1 but aren't quite ready to listen to ken bruce play candi staton. FuzzY-LogiC
I have to say this... Back in 99 when I actually listened to R1 during the daytime, I quite enjoyed Sara Cox AND her voice, but I guess I'm just a crazy Dane who doesn't know better ;-)
MikeW
i am still 24, i was just into trance/house very early. most people my age i know don't listen to radio 1, so they are going wrong somewhere. and besides, there is a big gap between the radio 1 and radio 2 age range's. people 30 are too old for radio 1 but aren't quite ready to listen to ken bruce play candi staton. I'm glad it's not just me that thinks this... I've been feeling 'too old' for Radio 1 for the past couple of years now as I can't really get into any of the daytime music output or relate to the daytime DJs anymore (I'm 26 & don't consider myself 'old' yet lol!). I used to really enjoy Moyles in the morning but I've been rapidly going off him in recent times also. Not to mention that now the majority of the urban/dubstep DJs off 1Xtra seem to be crossing over to R1 in their droves, I can feel an even bigger distance between myself & R1. Jules' show is the only show I listen to regularly week after week & when the curtain falls on that at the end of the month, I probably won't bother with R1 at all afterwards. As mentioned before, time moves on & things change, etc & I feel extremely lucky to have been part of the generation that has experienced Jules' legendary reign on R1 from day one until now... Looks like it'll be internet radio/podcasts for me from now on!
lyndon
i'll be likewise. i may listen to pete tong now and again, and if there's anyone good on the essential mix. but i've been going off radio 1's daytime output since mark and lard left, and i was 16 at the time. i don't mind scott mills but he's even too 'hello! magazine' sometimes like the rest. i've always had the specialist shows though and trance and house was well catered for on radio 1 until a couple or 3 years ago. i used to enjoy seb fontaine, before him danny rampling, dance anthems with dave pearce too. and of course, judge jules. today ipod's and music channels rule the commercial generation, and even podcasts now play a huge part with the dance music scene. so it's harder for radio 1 too pull listeners in now more than ever. it's hardly like they have the creative and original edge in the daytimes like they used to. Number2Fan
Lol yeah you are Fuzzy!! Now we have every radio station in the world on our phones. If radio one's presenters suck arse, we'll tune out. But.... Radio adverts are bloody annoying.. So the bbc win on that front. Although my iPod/phone has every thing I wanna hear on it, it does lack that 'in company' feel that radio has. Radio ftw!
Max Kane
Spotify renders Radio 1 completely pointless anyway! \o/
Number2Fan
How?
Max Kane
How? You can listen to a vast, vast, vast (VAST!) amount of music, for free if you use the regular service, without the need for radio presenters diatribe. If I work from home, which I sometimes do, or if I'm hanging at the house and want music on I will always use spotify over putting the radio on. I've created myself a gigantic shuffle playlist with hundreds of my favourite albums (plus some new stuff I want to check out) and it is magnificent. The basic account gives you ten hours of music free per week - with ads interspersed every few songs. The premium account gives you unlimited music with zero ads! Number2Fan
I have spotify on my iPhone, it never plays anything, so I don't use it, but also, when I am alone I quite like a radio DJ, or a feature. For me, there will always be a place for radio

Max Kane
is there any word yet on a goodbye essential mix? Nothing yet - Moguai is on this week (another DJ who was once good and got nowhere and has now sold out and is huge) so the time is running out. I would have thought Jules may mention it but, in his latest diary report, there is nothing at all. Unless they are making it a big surprise I doubt it will happen
Quadrant
It would be nice for a final e-mix from Jules but I can't see it happening. And his next (pre-recorded) co host before he leaves is with Oakie again. I thought they hated each other? Back in the day I mean... 98/99 there were words spoken! JasonB
All I can remember was a Jules diary report which mentioned (without actually naming Oakie) a DJ in ibiza during a liv essential mix mad a proper mess of it.
lyndon
it would be a shame if there wern't a final essential mix, but i wouldn't be suprised. radio 1 is a station who seem to have no time or respect for former dj's, they are ashamed of their past as well. MikeW
I think a final Essential Mix would be brilliant on paper but sadly I very much doubt it will happen. Even a final show containing some of Jules' all time favourites during his reign at Radio 1 would be wicked but it wouldn't surprise me if it was just a normal show as if he wasn't leaving (typical Radio 1!). Shame because some sort of tribute show or E-Mix would be a great way for him to sign off & it should definately happen considering the years of service he has given. Briggsy
Although Jules is leaving his regular Radio 1 slot in a few weeks, there is still plenty of time for him to do an Essential Mix as he's not actually quitting DJ'ing. Don't be too surprised to hear Jules doing a special Essential Mix at the end of the year, or from Judgement Sundays. Remember that Essential Mixes are often planned months in advance - and if they've got DJs pencilled in that they don't have the opportunity to get on Radio 1 that often (such as Deadmau5 or Paul van Dyk), then they'd have to fit those in when the opportunity comes up - whereas, getting an Essential Mix from Jules should be fairly easy I would imagine. Unfortunately though, I feel that if Jules did do an Essential Mix, then it would just be a typical "current Jules set" - not one of him playing all his old favourites as we all want him to do. Jules has made it clear in the past that he's not overly keen on 'classics/oldies' sets, plus he also mentioned a while ago that he's got rid of most of his vinyl collection - plus his style has changed completely from 'the good old days'. I can't help but think that if he did an Essential Mix, we'd all be left quite disappointed. With regards to Oakie - I remember Jules having a swipe at him about 5 years ago. Jules stated during his online diary that when in Ibiza, he went to check out a few other DJs - and he heard one of the most boring sets ever from Oakie. He didn't actually mention Oakies names, but it was blatantly obvious from the comments on his diary via the clues given that it was Oakie. That said, there are also DJs that have criticised Jules before but still appeared on the show - so I think they must all take it with a pinch of salt. Max Kane
Oakie was chronic up until about a year ago when it all seems to have clicked back into place - so he deserved the jip!
