Recommended Posts

Welcome to the board mate :)

Unfortunately dub-step rules at the moment so no-one us guys want will get a chance (ever).

We're stuck with Skream & Benga (sp) for a good while yet.

Bring back Danny Rampling and let's go back to the good old House roots - where it all came from. "Do you remember House?"

In my dreams, unfortunately :(

If you're talking about had Radio 1 opted for another Trance/dance DJ rather than a Dubstep, then, in all honestly, I don't think there would have been another ready-made replacement.

The only DJ that really ever had a chance, due to him playing "across the board" rather than one specific style, was Eddie Halliwell - but he never really sounded too comfortable on the radio. He sounded a bit too "robotic" and scripted rather than naturally flowing. The other British Trance DJs that covered Trance (Hardwick, O'Bir, etc) weren't as diverse as Jules and Eddie - so there would have been very little else on offer other than a 2 hour show of uplifting/melodic Trance.

If we're going old-school and talking about who we would have liked to have seen on Radio 1 years ago, then i'd say John Kelly. Very similar in style to Jules musically back in his day, and definately a personality (although perhaps a little too strong for radio at times ;) ) Alternatively, Brandon Block was always very good on Kiss, and could have easily moved to Radio 1 and fit right in back in his day. Riley and Durrant were always really good on Galaxy too - i'm surprised they never moved to Kiss, Capital or Radio 1 at some point. Their show was a bit wasted on Galaxy.

i listened to andi durrant who's still on capital here in birmingham the other night on the way back home. i'd go as far as to say it's probably one of the best dance shows on the air today.

I like Skream and Benga.

We don't listen to Jules anymore anyway, and my days of staying up late and recording radio shows coz I might be first to hear an amazing new tune are well and truly over.

IMO though Jules could never ever be replaced! :)

Trance and melodic House are in a trough at the moment. Give it 5 years of obscurity and undergroundness and some gems will come forward and with that, some good DJs.

As much as I hate it a dubstep show will now follow Tong (and I do like dubstep), I can't think of anyone that could replace Jules.

I'm confused Jason, do you hate it or like it? :)

He likes dubstep but hates the fact a dubstep show will follow on from Tong

That's how I read it anyway

i just hope they dont get rid of Tong. How can they? He is still relevant and has moved with the times, which is why he is still going strong.

I'll give him another year. Radio 1 want younger presenters, and its clear that dance music isn't that important to them any more. They've already tampered with his show times twice in recent years - so they've proven that they're not afraid to make changes to their most successful shows.

I reckon, if they hadn't already been getting rid of as many DJs as they are, he'd have gone this year. I think he's only there now to help steady the ship for a year, and so that Radio 1 can hit back at critics that are saying Radio 1 are trying to go too 'urban' by saying "well we do still have Pete Tong in place to prove that we still want to represent dance music".

as mentioned above house will make a comeback given a few years, not so sure about trance sadly. radio 1 will be well and truly screwed when they have a load of dubstep dj's around and everyone is bored of it by then. besides there's going to be a massive wave of commercialisation of dubstep soon, i've heard justin bieber is 'experimenting' with it on his new album. think of that as what ultrabeat and scooter was a few years ago to the dance music of the time.

Pete Tong should never be forced out - the guy is a phenomenal radio presenter (regardless of what music he plays he is always engaging and professional).

I was surprised when they bumped him behind Annie Mac (who is just terrible) but I hope he stays there forever.

He may well have to adapt to a shit timeslot though - like Annie Nightingale - in the future to stay around.

As a teenager I used to sit in the living room with headphones on tuned into Annie Nightingale after the Top40 every weekend. :)

Hard to believe that was over 20 years ago.

She's great though, a proper DJ not radio presenter, DEEJAY, in it for her love of music! :)
