Well done Christian, surely a proud moment to cherish and kudos to Jules for doing so :)

Will check this out and think we will all certainly ensure this is available on the archives.

Noticed he played Above & Beyond's Alone Tonight which is what Jules told me was one of his fave male vocal tunes when I asked him since I'm putting together a mix... Wonder if that got him thinking :)

in my eyes this was not a good mix for the last show where was the real tunes this cant be the real last mix i was thinking he will do an essential mix with all great tunes from 1997 to 2012

I agree. After waiting months for this show, it was a bit of an anti-climax :(

There are so many amazing tunes that i've associated with Jules over the years - yet he played quite a few average tunes in comparison. I was expecting Green Martian - Industry and Brainbug - Nightmare as dead certs. The Gladiator theme is a weak tune. Rock Your Body Rock definately wasnt one of the strongest or most supported tunes that Jules played that year. The 2nd hour started well - it sounded quite fast and energetic, and the mixing was fairly decent - then it slowed right down, the tunes became average, and the mixing was very 'slapped in' and careless. Very much like a typical present-day Jules club set :(

The set was also the kind of style that Jules would play now - rather than the old 'banging' Jules. I think if we'd have heard an 'older style' Jules set, we'd have heard things like Green Martian - Industry, Rockafellas - Da Boss Track, Altitude - Excession, etc.

I agree with all you've said there Briggsy although I didn't get my hopes up to be honest. I enjoyed listening live none-the-less. It was good hearing some of the earlier tracks coming in during the mix - my ears pricked up when I heard 'Can't keep me silent' mixing in because I didn't expect to hear that track to be fair. Some others were fairly obvious while others still were really not expected. I was convinced 2006 had to be either Team SR - 'Leaving London' or Fabio Stein's 'Tran 4' since he played both tracks about 20 weeks running that year. Was also surprised not to hear 'Laid Bare' although I guess that would have been a bit like blowing his own trumpet (pun intended).

The 2009 choice was weird as well - 'See the sun' - I'm sure there were loads of other tracks he supported much more than that one that year.

Anyway, I think we all have our ideal tracklists or dream lists in mind for what we'd have liked to have heard but I dont think it was ever going to happen. I really think he should have done the last show live and it would have been nice to have him pop in during Pete's show or something - to have made more out of his last night would have been good.

and the mixing was very 'slapped in' and careless.

Indeed a few instances of straight cuts/edits from one track to another, this was purely due to time constraints but really the seamless mixing couldve been done at the right points then tracks edited down just like they used to do with most ministry comps to fit all the tracks in.

Jules said they are tracks he particularly enjoyed so his choice entirely, even though we could've picked bigger and better tunes he hammered more and come to associate with him at the time, as much as we would argue over some of the choices it was ultimately his choices.

Too be honest I think a lot of it is probably because he doesn't like playing classics anymore and I think someone on here stated he isn't a fan of playing classic sets too so I think this could have been down to that. I feel really disappointed at radio 1 to be honest he has contributed so much to the music industry that like you say it was like he was ushered out he is a legend in all our eyes and I'm sure many other people and I think we can all agree he didn't get the send off he deserved. I suppose they see dubstep ect as being the "in" thing at the moment so they have to be at the forefront also i think we can all say the trance scene i guess isn't as good as it once was but i haven't been in clubbing in a while so i'm not sure.

I think maybe Jules didn't want the big fan-fare send-off himself. No reason to me thinking that, he just strikes me as a humble kind of guy like that. Did he do anything special for his decade at Radio1 (I wasn't listening at that point)? Even that's a pretty massive achievement on it's own.

Props to Christian for getting his track played :D

I worry when the new Dance Anthems host can only dig out a "classic" in the mould of "Tracking Treasure Down" - I could name you about 100 better Gabriel & Dresden tracks for a start, oh and wasn't it released in like 2005, does not bode well

I didn't expect him to play some of them tunes also. I thought he would have played Marc et Claude - I Need Your Loving (remix from 2000).

Who was the remixer again?

Ratty did a remix of it - which Jules played a hell of a lot. Dark Moon also remixed it

I agree, too , Briggsy.

Had this at the back of mymind and been giving this some thought...

I do like that Gladiator track and think it was more of personal selection Jules rather than a classic for he and his sets. If you recall, he did do his own take on the track and even said on air he was basically saddened the sample didn't get cleared, but he still supported Dave Lambert's take on it. I love both of them...

Tunes for me that I would've expected to hear:

- PPK's Resurrection (Jules IMO discovered this tune and if I recall correctly, Tried and Tested it and played it all year round.)

- Push's The Legacy (Jules cained this too for a while and think it was the only time in the history of his show where he 'Tried and Tested' a track twice!

There are many to choose from, but would've liked to have heard a Darren Tate track (aside from Angelic), perhaps Jurgen Vries' The Theme or The Opera Song. I remember a lot of hype where that was an Unknown for some time and I bought both on White each for £8 (I think). Eventually got slightly 'commercialised', but I know Jules discovered and established these. I used to love where he would just get tracks sent to him from artists on white labels, only to see them emerge with who was behind them and ultimately help get them signed.

Just on PPK, Aza. I'm nearly positive that it was Oakie who broke that track. The story goes that he got handed it to him playing a gig, and loved it so much he played it in his set right there and then.

edit, this is all I can find on it, from Ppk themselves.

"In Russia we don't have the benefit of radio play and the media, there is no dance scene at all in our country. We recorded a CD and handed it over to Paul Oakenfold in America. He then played it in DJ sets for several months. We've been drinking for a month to celebrate!"

@A2a I had that show on tape, but i lost when i moved in with an ex. That is the one show out of all of them that i would love to hear again.

It is a shame Jules is gone. His contribution to dance music cannot be underestimated. But here we are again, Radio 1 have 1Xtra, which dubstep in my eyes, clearly fits onto, yet its wheeled out on Radio 1. This annoys the hell out of me.

Anyway, enough of that, The final mix started well enough, and the first three tracks did trigger some memories. It's scary that "the bass" is 5 years old already! wow. When it started, it was like Jules of old, however as Briggsy stated, it just slowed down to the sound of now.

It truly is the end of an era. I remember first tuning in around mid 99 time, hearing Mario Piu "Communication" (Yomanda Remix) and thinking WTF is this shit, yet it stayed on and i got hooked and listened in without fail every week - especially from 1999-2002.

I have to admit that I was disappointed by Jules' last show.

I put up with the modern first hour to hear a bit of history.

Obviously we will all have opinions on what Jules 'should' have played, but for me some of his choices seemed quite odd given how, when you look back, he absolutely hammered some tracks, ie Plummet - Damaged, Mauro Picotto - Lizard, Needle Damage - That Zipper Track, DJ Elite - Fuct Camera.

I remember him saying that he was onto his second copy of 'Damaged' as he'd worn it out!!

Thanks for the memories Jules, and thank God for the archives - i'll be playing his older mixes for many years to come! :D

Jules is a legend and I suspect that we would all struggle to pick our best on the last day. I am disappointed with R1 who I think will crash and burn now that they have lost JJ and Dave Pearce.

I think everyone has a time limit, but they haven't replaced them as such. The new dance anthems is a discrace.

I think the daytime output dosen't help either, Greg James, Fearne Cotton etc. I think they aim to the oldest in their mid 20's for the age range, but they can't push much above 15 with what they have on air now.
