  9. The main FSOE label is more geared towards the uplifting / melodic side, whereas FSOE Clandestine leans more towards the Techier sound.

Clandestine releases some good stuff - but like the main FSOE label (and a lot of labels these days really), a lot of their releases are hit and miss.

If you like FSOE Clandestine, then check out the Grotesque and Aerys labels too. They release some stuff which is very similar to the Clandestine stuff.

Times flies... I thought of the djsource.co.uk and thetrancearena.com days and I thought I wonder what the other DJs are up to nowadays like Lazarus, DJX2, DJ Carl Briggs etc :)

The mix is banging, Carl! I loved it. The mixing was spot on so the tinnitus ain't stopping you yet, though it looks like the quarterly sessions didn't last long as the last one was 5 months ago.

Shame a lot of the music forums are dying, etc. djsource.co.uk gone, I closed djpassion.co.uk down when we had that Radio trouble with Passion Radio if you remember? Boooo.

Look forward to the next one.

    Anyhow,

    Cheers

I miss those days. The DJ Source forum in particular was always really busy - but really friendly too. The Trance Arena struggled to get off the ground sadly - but I enjoyed the two years I had running it.

Lazarus is still going strong. He still DJ's and produces - and he also runs Defcon Recordings - which has had some big support from A-list DJ's. I've seen DJX2 on a few flyers and bumped into him a few years ago when he was on the same line-up as a friend. I think he's just toned down his online presence. Carl Briggs - never heard of him ;-)

Glad you enjoyed the mix. I've never really had problems with Tinnitis - my hearing problems were more down to struggling to hear mid-range frequencies (snares, percussion, etc) - plus a really painful stabbing pain in the left ear. Rather coincidentally, I've got a GP appointment this Tuesday - about my ears! Yet again.

The podcast did run behind schedule earlier in the year after suffering a bit of "DJ'ing mental block" for a couple of months - but it's now back on track. Episode 2 was online a couple of months ago (I forgot to update this post and also Soundcloud - but it did appear on iTunes). Episode 3 was released last night (see post below) - and Episode 4 has already been recorded ready for release at Christmas - which puts me back on schedule for next year.

It's a shame you had to close DJ Passion down :-( Sign of the times now I think - forums and online radio stations seem to be few and far between these days. Technology and Social Media seem to have killed them both off :-(

  14. Thanks for listening and for the feedback mate. Boca - Play With Me is such a tune isn't it? Warped records is the one side to DJ'ing with vinyl that I don't miss. I remember Altitude - Excession being a nightmare to mix because it suddenly jumped up 2bpm which threw the entire mix out.

My aim is to have a "retro" mix similar to this online every three months - the next one should be recorded and online within the next couple of weeks hopefully :-D

  15. Hi guys,

I've just started a quarterly "retro" Trance, Tech-Trance & Hardgroove Techno podcast - which will feature approximately 75 minutes of tunes from the mid-1990's through to around 2018.

  16. I wonder will Jules return to the BBC in the future.

I can't imagine him returning to Radio 1 ever again - he's too old, past his best, and his style of music is now "unfashionable" (ie, not Dubstep or another form of crap music that is flavour of the month). However, as he's not retiring from club DJ'ing until another 5 years time, I would imagine we'll get to hear him do at least one Essential mix during that time.

I wouldn't be too surprised to see him on Radio 2 at some point though - even if only a bit-part role hosting one-off dance shows at Christmas time or special documentary type shows regarding the dance music scene - similar to what Dave Pearce does on Radio 2.

I still find it a bit hard to believe that he wants to be a Solicitor.

I get the impression, from the way Jules has talked about his new job, that he's not going to be a '9 til 5' solicitor like Matt Hardwick retired from DJ'ing to take up. It sounds like Jules' job is going to be more legal advice orientated - advising clubs/bars/entertainment venues on entertainment laws that they'll have to adhere to in order to keep on the right side of the law (licensing laws, venue security staff laws, etc) - rather than representing individuals in court, etc (which I believe is the route Matt Hardwick has gone down).

I would imagine that if Jules was going to be a lawyer representing companies/individuals in court, etc, then he would have had to retire from DJ'ing with immediate effect. I can't imagine that being the kind of role that could be juggled alongside DJ'ing. Can't imagine the courts being too impressed if Jules turned up in court representing someone several hours after he's been DJ'ing in London after half a bottle of Grey Goose vodka. Plus Jules is continuing with Judgement Sundays (certainly this year anyway) and lives out in Ibiza for 3 months of the season - so I doubt he'd be able to commit to that whilst being a "full time" lawyer too.

  17. Although Jules is leaving his regular Radio 1 slot in a few weeks, there is still plenty of time for him to do an Essential Mix as he's not actually quitting DJ'ing.

Don't be too surprised to hear Jules doing a special Essential Mix at the end of the year, or from Judgement Sundays.

Remember that Essential Mixes are often planned months in advance - and if they've got DJs pencilled in that they don't have the opportunity to get on Radio 1 that often (such as Deadmau5 or Paul van Dyk), then they'd have to fit those in when the opportunity comes up - whereas, getting an Essential Mix from Jules should be fairly easy I would imagine.

Unfortunately though, I feel that if Jules did do an Essential Mix, then it would just be a typical "current Jules set" - not one of him playing all his old favourites as we all want him to do. Jules has made it clear in the past that he's not overly keen on 'classics/oldies' sets, plus he also mentioned a while ago that he's got rid of most of his vinyl collection - plus his style has changed completely from 'the good old days'. I can't help but think that if he did an Essential Mix, we'd all be left quite disappointed.

With regards to Oakie - I remember Jules having a swipe at him about 5 years ago. Jules stated during his online diary that when in Ibiza, he went to check out a few other DJs - and he heard one of the most boring sets ever from Oakie. He didn't actually mention Oakies names, but it was blatantly obvious from the comments on his diary via the clues given that it was Oakie.

That said, there are also DJs that have criticised Jules before but still appeared on the show - so I think they must all take it with a pinch of salt.

  18. I don't get Radio 1's big deal over the age of presenters anyway.

Has anyone ever listened to the radio and thought "Oh i'm not listening to this presenter. He's better than that 25 year old they had on earlier - but he's the wrong side of 35 so i'm not listening."

Surely its the quality of the output that attracts listeners. Pete Tong is the perfect example - his show now is probably the best its ever been, yet he'll be the next dance DJ to go during the next schedule revamp because of his age. Why? The output is still excellent.

Its just an excuse for Radio 1 to free up some slots so that they can fill them with "flavour of the month" presenters - or more crap TV celebrities that sound awful on the radio because they have no radio background.

  19. So, it seems Jordan Suckley is getting a permanent show on Radio 1. Thoughts? At least there will still be a trance dj there once Jules leaves.

Jordan Suckley is an excellent DJ - he has immense natural skill (scratching, EFX tricks, the use of 3/4 decks, etc) that is up there with Eddie Halliwell and the late Barry Connell (in fact, he's from the same artist agency and was good friends with both of them too). He also has a good ear for tunes - and is responsible for the management of the Goodgreef record label and podcast.

The only slight concern is that if his latest productions are anything to go by, he seems to be going a little cheesy/commercial and incorporating that dreaded Swedish House Mafia-esque sound into his tunes.

If we get to see the Jordan Suckley from a couple of years ago, then expect a bit of everything - particularly some really full-on, fast, 'boshy' stuff that Jules' show has lacked for the past few years. Hopefully that's the side of Jordan Suckley that we'll hear on Radio 1.

  20. What do you mean by this sir?? Poor unicorn

Its basically another one of the Trance DJ's that are trying to look cool/rebellious against the current state of Trance by trying to make out that they're doing something different to the rest.

Above & Beyond started this Trance 2.0 nonsense, the likes of Kearney, Indecent Noise, Patterson and Askew now refer to themselves as "Team 140" - and Markus Schulz's dig is 'Unicorn Slaying' (basically, the Unicorns being 'bad Trance tunes').

All of the above makes me cringe. Its meant to be semi tongue-in-cheek, but at the same time, i'm sure that by using these tags, they're hoping to win new fans by making them think "Hell yeah, I hate all that slow stuff too - so i'll follow the Team 140 guys instead". Yes, Trance has slowed down and become rather dull and tedious - and some artists have gone quite cheesy too - but all these stupid names/titles/indirect digs are dividing the trance scene even more.

Forget the stupid names, tags and gimmicks - just get on with it and let the sets/productions doing the talking.

These guys have short memories. One minute they'll post a Facebook status saying "Trance can be any speed or style - there are no rules" - and then half an hour later, they'll post "Just produced another 140bpm power-Trance monster #team140" - errr hello? Schulz claims to be 'Unicorn Slying' (ignoring cheesy tunes) - then he'll play some Big Room Reconstruction of a pop-dance act like Calvin Harris. Its just making them all look stupid with gay tags/divisions :pinkman:
