Wakey
Brazilian Luiz Scolari has apparently been offered the England managers job by the FA - http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/i...als/4949118.stm What's everyone's thoughts on this ? I don't think it's a bad thing. If they think he's the man for the job and he can do well for us, why not!
Max Kane
Think that it says it all about the FA, they don't read into things properly, Scolari has the best CV with being a World Cup Winner etc but i think Howard Wilkinson (For once) made a great point that winning the World Cup with Brazil isn't really that difficult and basically if you don't win it says your a bad manager rather than wining it proving your a top manager. His record with Portugal is good but nothin amazing, they couldn't even beat Greece at home and only got past us cos the ref was a tart. Big Sam (and i'm not just sayin this cos he's from down the road) would have been my pick, he's worked wonders with a pittance of a transfer fund and manages to get the very best out of deadwood players. The idea that he cannot handle big names is tosh aswell, he's had Djorkaeff, Okacha etc on his hands and has continued to get the best out of em even in the autumn of their careers. Quadrant
Scolari was not chosen because of his facial hair. I think he will be a superb manager and his experience in managing Class A teams will bode well. All hail Big Phil. The English managers who were caught in the limelight recently will be infinitely more ready to take on the role of managing the national team after Scolari. The future is bright now, and even brighter after the Scolari era.... that is if he accepts the job in the first place.
Wakey
Just heard that they practically want him to sign on the line. I personally think that he is capable of doing a good job, and he's probably better than a lot of the English managers whose names were connected with the job. I guess we'll have to see what happens. We do have quite a strong England team. It's just finding someone who can use what we've got, maybe this is the man ?
Aza
Best for man for the job no doubt, needs to be english! Don't believe in all this foreigner business!
Neuro
When all the debate was going on, I secretly hoped for Scolari. Who cares if he's foreign, as long as he does the job which I think he's more than capable of.
bigsteve
I'd prefer a native manager, but if a foreign one brings better results, then so be it
Neuro
Don't forget when Scolari managing Brazil is no easy feat, coming from a country where winning to World Cup is not so much a hope as an expectation, something he fulfilled in Japan/South Korea, beating England on the way - and with 10 men. Reading yesterday's The Times as well as international feats he's also got lots of success at South American club level, winning the Brazilian Cup with Gremio in 94, the Copa Libertadores in 95 (that's the SA equivalent of the Champions' League), the Recopa (SA Supercup) in the same year, and the Brazilian Championship in 96, before moving to Sao Paulo and then Palmeiras, getting another Libertadores title on the way. He's knocked out England in both the last 2 major tournaments with Brazil and Portugal respectively, the latter getting to the Euro 2004 final. The Portugal FA are far from happy if this goes ahead as Scolari promised them he wouldn't agree to any deals before the World Cup, lol
Max Kane
He's a top draw coach don't get me wrong and should he be given the job then obviously i'll support him full tilt, but i just think that it's a bit of a kick in the teeth for English managers that they have been overlooked again. The question of experience is a bit of a mute point aswell, how are people like Curbishley, Allardyce etc gona get experience if they're never gona be offered a chance to prove themselves at the highest level. Though i don't want Mclaren to be given the job surely he has the neccessary experience having worked with Man Utd and also been involved with England for 4 or 5 years? Max Kane
Get Brian Blessed in! After his appearance on Soccer AM a few weeks back i'd be surprised if he was allowed out of the secure facility they keep him locked in for quite a while
Max Kane
Scholari u-turn, now he doesn't want the job! Was followed by a few reporters so turned round n told FA to stick it!
Neuro
Damn right! http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/i...als/4955490.stm Most significant I think was: The Brazilian, the coach of Portugal, said he had been shocked by intrusion into his life by the English media. "There are 20 reporters outside my house now," said Scolari, who had been strongly tipped in this week's media to become Sven-Goran Eriksson's successor. "If that is part of another culture, it is not part of my culture."-- I can totally understand that.
Max Kane
Aparently the real reason he turned it down was due to his family recieving death threats!?! Duno who would send them though.

Portugal definitely - they don't want to lose him as he's only been there a couplf of years I think. Maybe there's still a deal to be done after the World Cup?
