England vs Spain 7 Feb 2007

Watched this with all my mates last night in our local, had a bet with the barman that England would win and obviously lost.

Not sure what the view is in England, or if anyone watched it, but I thought we started really well and there were a few positives to take out of it... people chasing balls down, quick feet, it didn't look like England - I felt we were all over Spain to start with and then it faded away as we couldnt get that final ball.

Second half I didn't watch properly as I was trying to chat to a new girl sitting next to me at the same time. After 3 hours it turns out she is not up for sale (or rent, or even available at all), at which point I abandoned ship :D

What did people think about the game, did anyone even see it?

Watched with much dissapointment even in the land of Wales... Few big names in there, and still dint really do much. Agree with the papers in what Bjorn said. For being such a great cultured country, England sure have been losing their national competitive in sport!

Piss poor this, Spain looked so much more comfortable on the ball than us and looked as if they could step it up a gear if they wanted.

One of the only players to come out with credit i would say was micah richards, he was one of the only players that kept on going and didnt give anything up.

Im not one to judge but i didnt think Mclaren was they right man for the job and has yet to prove me wrong!

I never agreed with McLaren in the first place. He's never achieved anything at club level, he has no personality, and he'd been around the England set-up too long before. When Sven went, the whole system needed changing. Instead, it was just a continuation of the Sven era - only without Sven!

Allardyce was the man for the job. He brings the best out of players and is a great man motivator. Look at how he's built Bolton into a respectable side - with hardly any money and without big name players too. The thought of what he could do with the likes of Gerrard, Lampard and co scares me!

Everyone raves on about the Fergusons, Wengers and Mourinho's - but Allardyce has done equally as well IMO. The three neames mentioned there are at big clubs which already had good squads before they were there, and they've got good bank balances. Allardyce has single handedly turned Bolton into a mediocre first division side into a top six Premiership side.

Another problem with the England side is that many of the players think that just because they play in the bets league in the world, they can beat anyone - wrong! They go into games too confident and need bringing back down to earth.

We also play too many players in makeshift positions just to fit them into the side because they're a "fashionable" name. Instead of picking an on-form, lesser-known player, we'd opt to play the bigger named, out of form, player just because he's a "big name".

Too many players are picked on past reputation and form. Andy Johnson has scored four goals all season - and makes it into the England side (a team which is supposed to be the best players available in this country) - Yet that Lita fella that plays for Reading has been playing out of his skin and scoring goals - yet he wasn't picked. Rooney has had an indifferent season - yet he also makes the squad. Peter Crouch can't even get a game for Liverpool at times! Phil Neville has always been poor - yet he always gets picked too.

There are too many stale players aswell. Gary Neville has been in the England side for 11 years now and played in many tournaments - tournament which we've not won! If we've not won tournaments with those players, then thats obviously because they're not good enough, so perhaps its time to look elsewhere? Rio Ferdinand, Gary Neville, Michael Owen... they'v all been around for ages, and its time to move on. They'll all be in their 30's at the next world cup - we need to plan for that now with youngsters!

Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard have never played as well for England as they do for their clubs. How many chances can they posisbly have before they're replaced? We can't pick them just because their big names. If someone lesser known can do a better job, then they need to be picked instead. Just because they're good for their club doesn't make them able to adapt to international level. David Beckham during the world cup was a prime example of someone continually being picked out of form just because he's a big name. Aaron Lennon was ten times better than Beckahm during the world cup, and turned England around -we looked more threatening, yet he'd be on the subs bench for the following match...

Pick players on form, put them in their correct positions and find a manager that can motivate them - problem solved. Its not a hard solution to the problem. If we're struggling for form players in certain positions, then look in the Championship league - there's some good players there. If Ireland, Wales and Scotland can win games with players from that league, then so can we! We can't win with Premiership players, so we've nothing to lose.

Not only are we losing, but we're not even playing well and losing. At least under Kevin keegan and Glenn Hoddle, we were losing, but at least they played good attacking football and showed some passion.

I agree Briggsy, the problem is that to many players are just in it for the money, there not bothered about wearing their heart on the shirt and giving 100%.

Look at Lampard for example, i am yet to see him have a good game for England, he looks like a totally different player to the one that plays for Chelsea and as for McLaren how the hell did they come to the conclution he is the man for the job!

Look at what he did at club level, absolutley nothing.

Does anyone rate McLaren?

Nobody rates McLaren. The only reason he got the job is because the FA are still paying Sven £5m per year for the next two years as compensation - so they can't really afford anyone else.

McLaren was already involved, so he was a cheap option. A few quid payrise and voila - bobs your uncle.

If they'd gone for someone decent like Allardyce, they'd have to pay him a million or so per year, plus compensate Bolton - so it would have been another couple of million or so on top of what they're already paying Sven.

The FA is run by too many out of touch businessmen - lets face it, one used to be cheif executive of Royal Mail! There's a big difference between choosing an England manager and setting the prices for 1st class stamps and a next day 10am delivery to Doncaster....
