Aza
Who gets this frequently? I must get about 2-5 junk emails per day and now it is really starting to p!ss me right off.... I have always been extremely careful to who I give me email out to etc and stay away from subscribing to sites etc that I believe will market spam me. Even with download sites I opt out of marketing email as I prefer to do the ground work me self. For those reasons I prefer to use web based email to (think discussed briefly with Tim) rather than Outlook etc. Outlook I think (last time I checked) automatically opens messages and the sly little bar stewards can nab your details simply by just opening an email... Anyhow, with hotmail you can have settings such as "message headers" which When reading a message the Basic setting displays the sender's and recipients' names, the date, and the subject. The Full setting displays additional routing information that may be useful for tracing messages.. This apparently aids to combat and identify senders of such spam and prevent them from further doing so. Nevertheless I see no improvement... Can anyone suggest other methods to help eliminate this please? I don't even trust opening the mail to see if by clicking "unsubscribe" from the message to remove my email will work because I believe its a trick and it will prob subscribe me to other lists. I waste so much time opening me inbox to only discover unwanted messages and have even considered changing email addresses, but this I would imagine is more trouble than it is worth.... Max Kane
Hotmail is pretty useful in this way, i've found anyway. Just set junkmail filter to exclusive & then any email from anyone not in your contacts list goes to the junk mail folder, check the junk folder once a week to ensure you don't miss out on any emails & you're sorted. It also helps if you have a less than obvious email address, my addy is bail54(at)hotmail(dot)com & i've opened endless emails where the w***ers have just sent it out to everyone i.e bail1@hotmail.com, bail2@hotmail.com etc etc My brother's is a unique address & he hardly ever gets any *edit* just edited your email address there mate, as it could get grabbed from here for spam! Briggsy
bail54(at)hotmail(dot)com That is the biggest example of how to get your email address subscribed to spam lists. If you don't want spam, never put your email address on a forum! Forums attract "spiders" - most of which are harmless, and are sent in by Google, Yahoo, etc to crawl the site in order to give it a ranking on search engines. Unfortunately, there is software out there that emulates spiders and is used by people to trawl through forums - and filters out email addresses such as the one above. Those collected email addresses are then stored on file and sold to marketing companies and dodgy firms so that they can send you crap email about their dodgy half price Viagra, etc. If you're really lucky, you might win the Euro lottery (I won it 32 times in 2006), or you might have a Millionaire Nigerian that lost all his family in an earthquake and has only been given 6 months to live emailing you offering you all his money if you give him your bank details for him to pay it into. That Nigerian actually did extremely well because he emailed me three times in 18 months, despite having only 6 months to live on all three occasions. Despite being offered millions of pounds by an invincible Nigerian and winning the lottery 32 times, i'm still working full time and waiting until pay day next week Seriously, though, never put your email address out on forums or websites because you're opening yourself up to spam galore. Unfortunately, I made this mistake years ago and put it on a forum that was ranked number 1 on Google - and since then, i've had around 105 spam emails per day. Soooooo annoying! Thats why most websites these days have a "contact us" form to fill in rather than an email address. Its stops them being bombarded with spam. We use a program called Spamarrest at work though, which is VERY good and dosn't cost a great deal of money
bigsteve
I also get 5-7 spam emails per day. I have a Yahoo account and until recently displayed it on here. I'm not blaming the board, but I think thats how I stupidly ended up in this situation. In Yahoo you can select emails (without opening them) and specify it as spam. All your spam then goes into your 'bulk' folder and you can be left to enjoy a clean Inbox. Works pretty well too.
Aza
Yeh Steve mate, I know that Yahoo feature. It is almost identical with Hotmail, except reporting the messages as "junk/bulk" seems to do nout despite having all the techy settings on my account to help combat the senders of spam! Seriously, though, never put your email address out on forums or websites because you're opening yourself up to spam galore. Yeh that is a new rule of thumb these days with message boards and sites and I never have falled victim to this for the above reasons. This is what is sooo frustrating though cos I still receive such things... There is also a method in which junk people use, which is just to guess email names etc and send em everywhere. There are links in the mail, which just by opening it you are being reeled in after biting to the bait!
Ducky
I also use Yahoo mail, i get 2-6 spam e-mails a day, they go straight to the junk mail folder also. I have tried putting there email addresses in the blocker but end up getting them again a few days later under a slightly different email address. Neuro
For those reasons I prefer to use web based email to (think discussed briefly with Tim) rather than Outlook etc. Outlook I think (last time I checked) automatically opens messages and the sly little bar stewards can nab your details simply by just opening an email......I don't even trust opening the mail to see if by clicking "unsubscribe" from the message to remove my email will work because I believe its a trick and it will prob subscribe me to other lists. This is true and is why I used web-based email, since Outlook will try to display an images in the email (alerting the sender that your email account is active), as well as rich text format. Also never ever "unsubscribe" from a random company you are sure you never signed up to in the first place. It's a good idea to have a second "personal" email account which no real person knows but which you use to enter into forms on the internet if you're not sure and don't want to put in your real one... I've set up 5 email addresses for this website but as KR will tell you we got spammed heavily because I put the main email address in simple text on every page of the website, which when googled was easy to find and spam. However our web-based email accounts have spam filters which (now) do the job nicely; I only get 1 or 2 emails a week onto the main JJA account. My personal email account with http://www.fastmail.fm/ has amazing spam filters and I never have to worry - best web-based email in the world imo
Aza
I may consider getting a new account, but this will have to be done after I get a bit of work out the way... Is there any way to get my emails from my one inbox to another, or I guess I will just have to forward them all?
KR Tech
Is there any way to get my emails from my one inbox to another, or I guess I will just have to forward them all? Yes there is, some services have an option called IMAP migration. You will have to check with your new email service provider before you sign up. All you need is your IMAP server name (usually something like mail.mydomain.com) and your original login name and password. Then it should connect and download everything in that account into your new one. Gmail, Fastmail, etc also have forwarding options so whatever arrives in one inbox can be automatically sent to another account. KR

Wakey
I always get spam, in Outlook I've set up filters to get rid of a lot of it. When I sign up for websites these days I just use my hotmail account as I'm not too bothered a bout what ends up in there and I use their filtering system aswell. Aza
Simple solution, change over to GMAIL!!! Got a Gmail account fella... But what Im trying to say is my main account is msn and I have saved emails in folders etc. Preferably I want to keep my account, but if I change I need to transfer it all over... KR Tech
I would recommend transferring it all over, although I don't know about Gmail as I don't use it. I would have thought there is a function to transfer emails. Check their IMAP details as if they have it it's relatively easy to do. KR
