KSheehan
A few months ago jules posted in his diary section of his site that he was looking for new questions to update the Q&A section. Did any of you ask him anythin? Post up your questions and answers if ya did. My question was as follows: Q. As I've sent you a lot of stuff over the last year I've always wondered how you get through all the tracks you get sent. You say you get sent 300 odd promos a week, how and where do you listen to these? Do you have to burn them all to cds? do you separate all the different genres and how many times do you listen to each track before you realise you like it or not?? A. Hiya I listen to all the weblinks and promos from producers I know (ie you) and forward all the unfamiliar ones to the two different guys who filter through my stuff. They then burn me various cd’s of the week’s best tracks that are most suitable for my taste. I then choose the ones I like and edit every one to my spec. In the process of editing them down I get rid of about a further 20% that don’t sound so good after repeated listens. Cheers, Jules He didnt answer all my questions but intersting enough all the same. I would have to listen to all my promos myself, no ones taste is exactly the same, jules could be getting sent tracks that his two "guys" mightnt like but jules still could.. Whats your views? Justin Haze
Yep, totally agree Mr Sheehan, could be missing a few little gems and if he gets sent so much stuff why the same old track lists week in week out, maybe be worth taking a few chances on lesser known producers..... Cheers for the upload the other day
Ducky
I agree everyone's taste is different, but then again it is a near imposible task of listening and editing that amount of tunes i suppose especially when your as busy as Jules is! Moonman
agree with ducky, generally, we can all tell the better tracks from the weaker ones. Once the stronger ones are collated i'd imagine jules would pick the rest. I remember Eddie Halliwell saying something about this on his show the other week. He listens to them everywhere apparently cos he doesnt wanna miss a big tune.
Uberduck
I see your point but it'd be unreal for him to have to listen to all of those. I guess the 'guys' he uses have a good understanding of his style or else he wouldnt trust them? I can see how it could be pretty frustrating for producers such as yourself who are going to the effort of sending your tracks only for Jules himself not to listen to them. Neuro
And I'm certain Jules then filters down what his two trusted mates have whittled down for him further. However, personally, I'd hate to trust other people to pick my music as I'd be petrified of missing a gem.
Briggsy
Eddie was telling a bit of a porkie because GoodGreef's resident DJ, Shan, is Eddie's "filterer" As for Jules's tunes being filtered - I reckon this is why sometimes picks up on tunes quite late. They might be rejected by his "filterers" - but when Jules has a quite patch, or he has a quiet week of new releases, he might catch up on some of the stuff that his filterers have rejected - and then found a couple of gems himself. Even I don't know my style at times - If I like it, i'll play it. Nobody could predict what tunes i'd like because I surprise myself at times. Do you think he still keeps the ones he rejects??? I'd say he'd delete them as soon as he realises they're not for him maybe not doh..
Bjorn
one the the 'guys' is Simon Patterson. Si told me he sends him all the wikked new stuff but its jules who actually chooses not to play it all!! Just plays the same old stuff time & time again.. Briggsy
I knew Simon did it years ago, but I thought he stopped that. To be honest, Simon and Jules are worlds apart musically - whats good to Simon, might not appeal to Jules, etc - and I think thats where the problem lies. A filterer must have a very similar taste in music to the DJ that he's DJ'ing for. I dare say that Simon hasn't been chosen because his taste is similar - I'd say its more because Simon is tied in with Serious Artist management - so its convenience more than taste in music. Briggsy
I also think that Jules is making a HUGE mistake in not supporting the Richard Durand mix of Tiesto's lethal Industry. That has to be one of the biggest tunes around at the moment - and the reaction it gets on the dancefloors can't be beaten by any other tune at the moment. Adam Sheridan played it 20 minutes after Eddie Halliwell at Godskitchen last month, but despite that, it got a huge roar as loud as it did when Eddie played it. Its not very often that happens. Its Jules's style too - so I can't imagine why he's chosen to ignore this one.

But having said that, you cant argue with the floor, and on the strength of that he should really be playing Lethal Industry 07.
Bjorn
Well Simon actually does know Jules style - he only does his trance for him, the other 'guy' does the house. Its not like Simon picks out his fav tunes and sends em on... remember at crasher Si warmed up - and what a belter it was too - he played a prog set & got it absoloutly spot on! True about jules msising tunes too - i noticed he aint played either of Marcel Woods new ones - Kleenex/Tar Me...hmm!
Quadrant
Gone are the old days Jules used to spend all day Friday sifting through 500 vinyls... I bet there is a whole LOAD of stuff being missed every week The fragmentation of dance music has meant it's impossible to listen to absolutely everything, but luckily for us the adventation of the Internet has meant we have a choice now as well, and not just Radio 1. JasonB
Even Tong did at one point have I think it was Dave Dresden filtering stuff for him so theres gotta be other big names doing tha same.
Briggsy
If Simon Patterson filters out Jules's Trance tunes, then could you give him a slap for me please for letting "Samba 69" slip through to Jules

It's Simon and Chris Barratt I believe who do the "filtering" for Jules now.... Which is why I send tracks directly to his personal email - I don't want someone else's opinion - I want Jules'!!!! In fact, he needs a slap for producing it in the first place
