Football - becoming boring?

Following on from the Man utd thread, and a little more off-topic.........

Does anyone else feel that football seriously needs a revamp? Football used to be my favourite game, but these days, I'm not too fussy - Cricket has taken over as priority.

The English Premier League is turning into a Mickey Mouse league like the Scottish Premier. We now have four tiers to the Premier League. Tier one consists of either Man Utd or Chelsea for the title race. Financially, nobody else can compete with them.

Tier two is Arsenal and Liverpool - they're the only two clubs that can, if Man Utd and Chelsea hit a few from problems, try to break into the top two position. They're big clubs with huge traditional - but not quite up there with the big two.

Tier three is those that'll never compete with the top four, but can play some nice, attractive, football with a hope of gaining a european place - these teams are Bolton, Tottenham, Newcastle, Everton, Aston Villa, etc.

Then you've got tier four - the teams that struggle year in, year out, but somehow just manage to find a bit of guts to help keep them up. The likes of Blackburn, Fulham, Wigan, etc. You could even include the likes of Sunderland, Birmingham West Brom and Charlton in there. They're teams that promise everything in the championship, come up, go down, and do the same again year after year.

We pay a fortune to watch average games played by over-paid prima-donnas. I get annoyed watching the likes of Emile Heskey standing around doing, pretty much, bugger all for 90 minutes - yet get paid £60,000 per week for it. They earn more in a week than we do in 3 years, yet they sulk when someone asks them to sign an autograph. A contract in football is worthless too - as soon as someone shows enough money, that contract means nothing - the player is off.

Paying £40 per ticket for an hour and a half is wrong!

In Cricket, a player plays out of his skin for 5 days per week, from 10.30am til 7pm, with just a few crusty sandwiches and a piss break in-between. A TOP county player, if he's lucky, will earn around £70,000 per year. A player that struggles to break into the team will earn about £20,000 per year - which isn't a lot for a relatively short career. Also, if they're not in the first team, they get sent to play for an allocated "club" side - for example, if Andrew Flintoff is off form, and isn't selected to play for Lancashire, then they'll send him to play for a club side (which is a very high standard of, basically, pub team cricket) - which could mean that one week he'll be playing for England, and two weeks later, he could be playing for Altrincham) - and they accept it. They're happy to play alongside "unknown" people that play as a hobby because its part of the game. Could you imagine asking Didier Drogba to play for the Rose & Crown on Clapham Common on a Sunday afternoon? They'll also happily sign autographs and mingle with the crowd during and after the games. They don't retire as millionaires like some sportsmen do. On top of all that, they do other work for their counties - pre-season, they help out in the club shops and ticket office, and they often do community work teaching youngsters, etc. Paying £10 to watch a FULL DAY of county cricket is a bargain!

The same applies to Snooker. Snooker MUSt be the hardest sport to play. There's so much involved in the game of Snooker. OK, they earn a fair amount of money again, but like Cricket, its a full time job. We might only see them on TV a few months per year, but they practice morning, noon and night, most days of the year. Its a very clever sport. Watching the snooker over the last few weeks has made me realise just how much of a "specialist" sport it is - and a very tactical one too. Its not just a case of hitting a ball with a cue - there's so many other factors involved - angles, cue ball control, thinking ahead, maths - plus trying to work out what your opponent would do next, before you've even took your shot.

Footballers have it easy, earn too much - and we're paying for it. Its become very boring, predictable, and is no longer as enjoyable as it used to be.

Does anyone else feel the same way?

To be honest I haven't been following the premiership at all this season so can't really comment on it too much,

Cricket's always been my number 1 fav, but only because I was good at it in my school days and the fact that I've always enjoyed it from a very early age... nothing used to beat playing on the 1st XI pitch, getting some wickets and a suntan, whilst the girls would set up a picnic near the boundary rope and clap you in as you left the field with the sun setting towards 7pm... great feelings :)

Footie is over-the-top but it is exciting when you get the occasional win-or-die match. The Spanish season has been captivating and I've followed that this year rather than the English one, although I still maintain they roll around a bit here and there are definitely more red cards dished out per match than anywhere else in Europe!

LOL, imagine you had to watch Italian, Spanish or South American football? Our football is far better than their dross.

The italians dont watch football anymore die to the corruption, violence and the ongoing player exodus.

Spanish football is just generally poorer than Premiership football.

And South American footballers cant stay on their feet

Yeah it was an absolute belter of a match - whoever said Spanish football was boring? ;)

3-1 down at half time were Madrid at half-time... brilliant

I still think in Spanish football the referees are all too keen to whip out the surprise red card - great for the neutral though :)
