Ok I have done the most stupid thing of my life an knocked my external hard drive off my desk (with absolutely every bit of music I have) and now it wont connect with my computer  it says there is an error in my hard drive and its not accesible. Do you think it has been wiped or is there a way to recover the data on it somehow as I didnt have it backed up :( any help appreciated guys!!

Fear not Mr Sheehan :)

Even if you drop your hard drive from a multi-storey building, run over it with a car and dip it in a lake, there is still a fair chance you can recover your data (according to the tech experts at the BBC).

Check this link for more information...

I suspect the knock has caused something on your drive to become corrupt and your Operating System is having trouble reading the particular sectors on there.

In short (providing you got nothing to hide on there ;)), take it to some shop and hopefully they can recover it for you.

Furthermore, check that vid (proves a funny watch) and consider sending your disk off to the company in that clip

Yes it's like knocking a laser out of kilter in a CD player - everything is there, it just cant be read.

If you've tried everything, go get it sent off - although it'll cost you I'm sure you'll get all your files back in 1 piece :)

There was something on Channel 5's Gadget Show a while ago about this. The presenters basically tested them to destruction, sledgehammers, infernos, etc and it took a LOT of effort to destroy the info stored on them.

Cheers for the replies guys, Ya i actually saw that show where they tested out the different storage devices, I just panicked and thought it might be after wiping the whole lot! It connected once and everything was there but I didnt have enough space on my laptop to copy everything over. I took it to get repaired today, the guy said that data can usually be recovered by "deep freezing", never heard of it myself but he said theres a 50/50 chance of recovering it if its rightly f***ed that is. Hopefully its jus something small. fingers crossed!!

Good luck, hope you get a good result.

BTW on the Gadget show (a few months ago) they tested out Ipod and Mp3 players' protective cases/holders using drastic measures similar to those used in that video to test their durabilty.
