Neuro
I know the BBC and others are looking into their phone competitions after Blue Peter and Comic Relief faked their winners on TV and all the rest, but this kind of thing goes on all the time in the world of media and marketing and I can see how easily this kind of thing can happen, having done similar things myself in promotional photoshoots and marketing for a company whilst I was out in Spain - for example the average Joe doesn't really know or care whether the photo on your website is really the "Jeremy Stevens from Dulwich who won a 2-week course last week" or whether it is actually your mate Dave who sits next to you in the office... until Jeremy sees "himself" on the website you're managing and calls in to complain! (obviously this never happened to me but I can see how it could have very easily ) In the BBC's case surely it's RDF Media and the actual makers of the programme who should be held responsible for the falsified results/winners/misleading phone-ins, not the broadcasters themselves? Although in the case of phone-in competitions I can see why it's not fair to make callers pay £400 a second to enter when they have no chance of winning... Simcut
I wish something could be done about these companies like Readers Digest who send you a letter in the post "YOU HAVE JUST WON £20,000 OPEN THIS LETTER TO CLAIM YOUR PRIZE" they then tell you to ring a 090 charging £1.50 a minute and they keep you on there for 20 minutes and say "sorry, you have not won" How do people get away with this stuff? something seriously needs to be done about s***ty "spam" in the post..... It's still the BBC's fault Tim owing to the unique nature of how the BBC operates. The corporation has a duty to be honest and if they're subcontracting or directly contracting other companies to produce programming for the BBC who are being untruthful/devious, the BBC has a problem as it will have broken some of it's fundamental rules. With a company like the BBC, rules and regs are a must and there are an awful lot of them. I remember Jules once telling me that it is a sackable offense if a BBC employee does not have a TV license. Personally, I think these TV stations have taken the right steps about their phone in competitions and I would be quite happy to see all TV competitions/voting free and online. It's because the people at RD etc have the mentality of 'If you're dumb enough to open this letter and call, you're dumb enough to get ripped off by us'. It is not actually underhand in terms of business practice although it's all very suspect. There are ways around junk mail that is personally addressed to you although I can't remember the name of the mailing list one has to join (for free). Simcut
Its infuriating though, how much better would our national postal service be without the junk mail? f***ing infuriates me.

It would be making a huge loss - these junk mail companies spend a fortune on postage each year!

Quadrant
I think we should get John Virgo to do all the BBC competitions. It would solve all this mess instantly surely?
