Radio 1's Celebration of Pete Tong

Yeah he was the soundtrack to my teenage years and 20's when I was warming up at home and deciding what to wear out, and even when I worked late I'd listen to Tong ( and Jules) and wish I was I going somewhere good.

Quite an amazing stint really isn't it, 20 actual years and staying steady throughout. There's a few tunes I remember hearing on Tongs show, and so remind me of him.

Born Slippy being one of them.

His first ever Essential Mix is on Radio 6 tomorrow at 3,

I'll bloody be at work.

Big up The Tong I say!!

His Essential Selection cd (the yellow one) from 97 is timeless. I still go back to it time after time. Think it's the first mix cd I bought, and I never tire of it even after all these years. Gone a bit too 'experimental' for me recently, but still an absolute legend.

i was working last night and only caught parts of this. Does anyone know where the shows have been uploaded too? I want them for the collection, so i need to download them. I can only find them on alldj.org, but they now force you to sign up for a premium account at filesonic before letting you download anything.

Having now listened to it, it is indeed superb and timeless, a few things to point out, Its the Dub Extravaganza pt2. version of Black Sky played, along with I Called You being The Conversation.

Also Fk's Dub of La La Land didn't come out on Credence.

On paper It doesn't look that exciting really.

I would say it look's pretty awesome on paper... Extremely well thought out and structured, a fine approach indeed. Moby, Underworld and X-Press2...

I'm going to check this out.

Do notice your other comment saying it looks great - keen to hear this - this will whack this on the iPod :)

Tongs shows were goldmines for the tunes for many years... combined with Jules's heyday in the years straddling the millennium, you had 5 hours on a Friday night where it was difficult to turn the radio off as you might miss a good tune! B)

How often can you say that today?

The classic Tong & Jules combo on a Friday is what got me into dance music in the first place. Seminal times

I was already into Dance music but it almost seems like Tong was there since the dawn of time, and in a good way too, I can't actually remember pre-Tong Friday evenings.

I think maybe he coincided with me purchasing a massive Sony hi-fi for my bedroom and altho I mostly listened to Kiss100 I still had Radio one on a Friday night. :)

Good times :)

Definately! Rampling & Jules was also good on the Saturday too - although I always felt that Rampling would have been better before Jules, but hey, who cares.

Then there was Pearce to round things off an a Sunday.

Not to forget the outside broadcasts too.

Radio 1's dance line-up at its peak that was.

When I first started listening to R1, my mate was a big Danny Rampling fan and gave me a few tapes to have a listen to see what i thought. I said she was ok, not brilliant. He couldn't figure out where I got she from, and I said well it's clearly a woman, and you can have Dani with an 'i' for a woman. Turned out his tapedeck was banjaxed and recorded everything at the wrong speed and played back a good bit faster! Took us a month to twig as he'd just listened to the show live, never the tapes. He just thought I knew some bizzare sounding women!!

I used to do a lot of swimming, with most competitions on Saturdays for obvious reasons. The evening sessions would always run from about 6-8. I'd have Jules on in the car on the way to the pool, the walkman with Jules on during the event (when I was waiting to swim obviously) and then Rampling on the way home.

  • 3 months later...

Did anyone see and hear the show of Pete Tong's A-Z?

BBC R1 say: "On Friday 8th April, BBC Radio 1 is celebrating dance music legend Pete Tong's two decades at the station with a night of programming dedicated to his outstanding broadcasting career."

He went through the entire alphabet and his entire collection (apparently some unknown storage place in London) and pieced together a whole list of tracks spanning his entire memory and upbringing.

The method of deciding on some of the letters was a little weird in places, for e.g. deciding on Track F because the artist was French! Guess that shows his amazing insight into the tracks that he was so desperate to play. I recently checked out the podcast which was with Pete and Rob Da Bank and it has got me thinking of doing my own A-Z... Hopefully I will when I get a chance

Anyhow, here are the tracks played - thoughts!?

Tribe Called Quest – Can I Kick It (Boilerhouse Mix) [Jive]

Monty Python – Always Look On The Bright Side of Life [Virgin]

Prince – Controversy [Warner Bros]

Dillinger – Cokane In My Brain [bellaphone]

EPMD – Strictly Business [Fresh]

Serge Gainsbourg – Initials BB [Mercury]

Roy Budd – Main Theme (Carter Gets A Train) [Cinephile]

Joy Orbison – Hyph Mngo [Hotflush]

Goldie – Inner City Life [FFRR]

Depeche Mode – I Just Can’t Get Enough (Live At The Pasadena Rose Bowl) [Mute]

Kate Bush – Cloudbusting [EMI]

Jamie Principle – Baby Wants To Ride [FFRR]

Malcolm McLaren – Buffalo Girls [Charisma Records]

Paul McCartney & Wings – Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five [Apple]

Black Sabbath – Paranoid [Vertigo]

Phoenix – Love Like A Sunset (Tong & Rogers Sonar Mix) [White Label]

The Brothers Johnson – Strawberry Letter # 23 [A&M]

Roxy Music – If There Is Something [island]

Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross – Hand Covers Bruise [The Null Corporation]

T. Rex – Children of the Revolution [EMI / Reprise]

Eric B & Rakim – Paid In Full (Derek B Urban Respray Mix) [4th And Broadway]

Benoit & Sergio – Walk And Talk [Visionquest]

One Dove – Fallen [FFRR]

The Rolling Stones – It’s All Over Now [Decca]

Fine Young Cannibals – I’m Not The Man I Used To Be [i.R.S]

Ninjaman & Florigan – Zig It Up [Profile]

Ok guys, this has excited me a great deal and was just amazing to listen to. It's given me the desire and motivation to now do my very own "A-Z" of music.

I'm going to split this topic since this is where the idea was borne and continue in a new thread... I hope you will join me :)
