Briggsy
the problem with radio 1 is they have some head of programming running it who thinks what they want is best, but they never seem to ask the listeners what they want.Unless radio1 sorts this dance issue and gets some real propper talent alongside jules & tong and gets the dance shows on at a sensible peaktime hour there going to loose alot of listeners and this will become apparent in the quarterly rajar listening figures. This is Radio 1's problem mate - ignorance. Because its a national, tax funded station, they ignore the public because they don't have to worry about rajar figures, market share, etc - it has very little relevance or impact on their income. Regardless of whether they have 1o million listeners, or 100 million listeners, they'll still get a chunk of our license fee. If a commercial radio station were to take the same risks, their rajar figures would be affected, which would have an impact on their market share - and then they'd have to sell advertising slots for less because there would be less listeners, and companies aren't going to pay the same amount of money for 10,000 less listeners. Commercial stations have to take note of figures and listen to their audience - otherwise they'll lose income, and eventually go off-air. Radio 1 can carry on regardless - unless the Tories get in at the next general election - and then it'll be sold off and become a commercial station. They've already made that clear (although no doubt we'll still be paying the same for out TV licence, which funds Radio 1....) what really gets my goat with Radio 1 is, they seem more devoted to "urban" now than ever. Yet 1Xtra caters strictly for urban music. So, now Radio 1 will be pushing, it renders 1Xtra completely none void. If radio 1 is to switch to urban, then make 1 xtra dance specialist? surely? Agreed mate. I've said that for a while - if the BBC have 1xtra, then there's no need for any specialist Urban shows on Radio 1 at all. If people want Urban, they go to 1xtra, if they want dance, they go to Radio 1 - simples.... or at least it should be - but it isn't
dj9928
Another reason for me to switch off, Radio one has gone to pot, I remember reading a blog by Annie mac when she started at Radio 1, she was learning to beat match now she is running the shop, Pearce has gone, Jules will get the boot sooner rather than later, now Tongs been moved. Not big and certainly not clever
Briggsy
I'd rather they'd have kept Pearce than Jules tbh. At least Dave Pearce's show served a purpose. I'm not really sure of the purpose behind Jules's show now. Once upon a time, his Saturday sow was to get people in the mood for going out, and his Friday show was to introduce new music because he got new tunes before most other DJ's. Now, he's not very upfront because the likes of Armin, Tiesto and PvD get tunes before anyone else, whereas Jules used to be the first to get new tunes. He's also ignoring "proper" tunes and playing bootlegs on Radio 1. I've never really understood the sense in playing a tune on the radio that is never going to be released - a one-off play maybe, but not for weeks on end. The idea of a radio show is to introduce, and promote, music to a mass audience - and Jules isn't really doing that any more by playing old tunes, bootlegs and unofficial remixes, and loads of tunes that his mates/contacts have produced (Tristan D for example). Also, with his show being on at an "anti-social" time, he's not getting people in the mood for going out either - so, I don't get the point of his show any more. Would I miss Jules's show now if it went off-air? It'd be sad because it'd mark the end of an era - but I wouldn't actually miss the content of the show now. I did miss, and still do miss, Dave Pearce's show. It was nice easy-listening for a Sunday afternoon - and when he plays "proper" Trance, rather than anthems, his taste in tunes is far better than Jules's. Chrissie Brown
Another thing that makes me think that radio1 is trying to steer away from dance is that there aint really much of a live broadcast from ibiza anymore, years ago it was a full 3 day live broadcast from ibiza, starting with tong, now your lucky if you get 2 live shows and a whole load of pre-records not even the full live nights essential mixes, there all pre-records now. I agree.
Ian_k
i agree i think radio 1 made a bad move axing dance anthems, it did serve a purpose, yeh the format has been copied by many but it was popular on sunday afternoon, then they c**ked it up moving it to a late fri night slot, and it quickly lost listeners because they messed around with the format and time. i did and still do miss dance anthems on radio1, it worked and it did the job. I agree that radio1 dont care about listening figures that much, but to an extent they do, because it becomes a major headline and has bad press when they have suddenly lost a quarter of there audience due to daft controllers. Number2Fan
Hmmmmmmm personally I could not stand DANCE ANTHEMS it p***ed me off, when I was working on a Sunday evening and Dave Pearce and those phonecals in OMG!! I hated it, but it weren't aimed at me and I had Jules, anyway, basically I have no idea where or what happened to dance anthems and the only purpose I saw it having was linking tunes I'd always loved to Bloody Dave Pearce and making chavs highly aware of certain song titles that they had no business playing in their souped up Renault 5's!!! I lost interest in Radio one years ago, and I believe that's probably what they wanted anyway. Who needs 'em, we don't, we aint got enough hours in the day to waste them listening to Calvin Harris and La roux on loop, and Sara Cox telling me what a fat f***er she should be!! Briggsy
and those phonecals in OMG!! haha some of those phone calls were quality and a good listen, but others were s*** - it had clueless chavs that just wanted to hear their voice on the Radio. Beer Boy Barry: "Awwwwight Dave, i'm currently in McDonalds avin' it large - cost me 30p extra - can I have a tune on please" Dave Pearce: "Sure, whats your name, where are you calling from?" Beer Boy Barry: "Erm... my names Barry and i'm calling from....... erm....." *he forgets because he's still stoned so he asks his mate "Errr Jez, where we from again?" *his mate replies "Roverham innit mate"* - "Yeah thats it Dave, we're from Roverham" Dave: "Roverham, where's that?" Beer Boy Barry: "Near Sheffield innit" Dave: "Ah you mean Rotherham - I played there last weekend. I had an amazing time playing there with my trance trousers on. So what tune can I play for you?" Beer Boy Barry: "You know that one that goes do do do, dum dum dum, Waaaaaaaaaap - proper banging mate" Dave: "Erm...... I don't think I know that one. I tell you what, i'll play 'Da Hool - Meet Her At The Love Parade' for you" Beer Boy Barry: "Thats the one man! Thats the one! You're a proper legend innit! Roll another phat one!!" Dave: "Thanks for calling Radio 1 Barry" *Off air, Dave Pearce says to his producer "Are you sure his name was Barry? He spoke just like Westwood!" *

then94
First of all, hi all yea, Radio 1 has really gone down hill in the last year or so, changing the shows around just puts listeners off. I use to listen to jules's show almost every week, when its was on fridays nights at 9pm then they moved it to saturdays at 5pm and i still listened it wasn't quite the same though and once they moved it again i gaveup listening. did catch a few if i got the chance but these days i don't realy bother. I agree lossing Dave Pearce's show was a mistake. dance anthem's, jules's show and the essential mix were what made radio 1's weekend lineups, now jules is on at god knows what time, Dave Pearce has gone and the essential mix isn't all that essential anymore imo. kml
Kutski has the best show at the minute. He actually plays music and doesn't have stupid features like Jules.
Number2Fan
Kutski has the best show at the minute. He actually plays music and doesn't have stupid features like Jules. Must admit Kutski is sounding good to me atm too!!
kml
Must admit Kutski is sounding good to me atm too!! In some respects he reminds me of Jules around ten plus years ago. He sounds like he enjoys doing his show and is only going to get better.
Number2Fan
When I first heard his show I did think OMG who the heck is this, but as times gone on I've grown to respect him a bit. You're right he sounds like he wants to share the tunes he loves with us, and I quite like the kinda variety he is playing. Out of anyone on radio one atm he is easily the best! IMO
Moonman
i've always said i like what Kutski plays, sometimes its too hard for me. The only downer with Hardcore is, it's like Drum N Bass. To get the latest tune you really have to know a lot of the producers. Technically, Kutski is amazing, he p***es over Eddie Halliwell. Chrissie Brown
Must admit Kutski is sounding good to me atm too!! Me too, l like a lot of the stuff he plays but still prefer Jules's show. I wish Jules played earlier, l think the ideal time would be between 7 and 9pm on either a Fri or Sat night. It isn't the same listening to the iplayer the next day or in my case listening on my mp3 player. When l was younger l was always out on a Fri and Sat night and we always listened to some quality tunes whilst we were getting ready to go out so 11.00 would be too late for us as we would go out before 11pm. dj9928
I agree Jules is on to late. I prefered the Radio 1 schedule back about 9-10 years ago. Friday 6-9 Pete Tong 9-11 Judge Jules Sat 5-7 Judge Jules 7-9 Danny Rampling I think Danny Rampling done an excellent job on a Sat night, Played some really good funky tunes. Number2Fan
I have to say I think it was great getting ready to go out every Friday night alongside Tongs show, I just assumed people were still doing that in the same way as I did, but it has been 15 years, that's a long time for a radio one show, times change and alot of boys and girls these day are more into the Urban stuff or crum n bass. I noticed this myself as I have teenagers around me all the time, from school age to 20, and I think this is the audience radio is trying to keep up with. Tong has been great through out though and I hope he goes out a legend as he should do, instead of fizzling slowly away like poor old Jules seems to be doing a bit. I always found Danny Rampling a little bit boring, I didn't bother having him on too much and at that time anyway, like 1994 ish, KISS was really playing what I wanted to hear. Through the day on a Saturday I used to have Pete Wardman on, Graham Gold was still good, Jules was ok too but obviously got better around 1997 and then in about 98-99 KISS started playing things like Britney Spears in the day so I stopped listening to them then anyway as Radio had finally improved dance music wise, following the fashion. Which is what they are doing now isn't it? !
Spin Doctor
As for this whole 1xtra discussion. I find it hard to understand why people think that its creation means that Radio 1 is somehow obliged to get rid of all 'urban' programming. Regardless of what 1xtra is for, Radio 1 is supposed to be the 'cool trendy youth' station. As such, you can't deny that 'urban' has a claim to Radio 1's remit. Think of it another way, say that they started a BBC station dedicated to dance, you'd probably still want to see the important dance shows on Radio 1. Briggsy
I was out in the car last and was shocked to not hear Tongy at around 7. Gutted I don't think it's changed permanantly already has it yet mate? I think last night was just because they were doing the BBC Radio 1 in Majorca live shows later in the night. I think Tong should be back to normal next week.
JasonB
Tongs having two weeks in a row off as he usually does this time of year thasss all.. Who you prefer sitting in Vernon or Annie?!
Briggsy
Vernon! Annie's voice is awful.
Number2Fan
f*** off neither, they both have irritating voices, Jules was always good standing in for Tong, I used to like that. But again, I rarely have it on now, so it don't matter what I think does it! Vernon Kaye though standing in for Tong wtf, I'd be very f****** offended if I were Tong and they got Vernon in to fill for me!!! VERY F*CKING OFFENDED INDEED!!! :oddcake:
