  1. Yeah I have on and off over the past decade and a bit. Both voluntarily and paid, I did help set up an obit playlist for a small local station that came into use when the Queen died recently. There's a difference with people like the Queen Mother, Queen, Prince Phillip passing away of old age. And shock events like 9/11, and you could say to a lesser extent than that Diana dying young. Radio stations are prepared for the first instances, but not the second so much. Below are excepts from Radio 1 and 2 from the Sunday when Diana died in the early hours of the same morning. The top 40 was totally dropped for example. And Radio 1 used Ibiza Cafe Del Mar chillout style songs which were around in 1997 (Afterlife, Nightmares On Wax, Leftfield). Now below are excerpts of Chris Moyles when he was on the afternoon show during the 9/11 attacks. The playlist is still normal for the time on the day itself, and Chris is relying heavily on Newsbeat to get the latest information. Him and Mark Radcliffe beforehand, handled it well. But you could tell they were shook like a lot of people were. The slower music and stuff came into effect the following day when the management seemingly had time to think it through, and the scale of it all became apparent. Jules' show (from Sat 15th) still reflects this but by the weekend things were starting to normalise again a bit more.
  2. Radio 1 were ready for it with the queen mother. And with the queen too. It's called "obit precedure". There's a set of rules, playlist to be followed. I did drop in to Radio 1 after both Prince Phillip and Liz died in recent years. Scott Mills was on air with Phillip and he was directed to play the slow pop songs from the Radio 1 database. Ed Sheeran and Beyonce - Perfect I remember hearing, sure slower Adele stuff etc went out. And him just repeating the news and reading out some comments from listeners. Coming out of obit in the days after I remember hearing stuff like Alex Adair - Make Me Feel Better, Felix Jaehn stuff too. To bridge the gap back to normal. When the queen died both Radio 1 and Radio 2 took a full speech news service (may have been 5 live) as soon as the news broke. The first normal radio 1 show the following day was Greg James. No music beds, no usual features. Just Greg reading out stuff from people listening. And a restrained playlist. I actually have Radio 1 recorded from the point she died over the next couple of days or so. Nothing can prepare you for 9/11. That afternoon Mark Radcliffe broke the news (Lard stayed quiet), and he just sounded in shock. The same with Chris Moyles after when he came on at 3, one of the towers collapsed as he came onto the air. The playlist was still normal though, stuff that was new at the time. Teenage Dirtbag, Basement Jaxx Romeo, Roger Sanchez Another Chance etc. Only in the days after 9/11 did radio 1 tone it down. They played lots of Coldplay, Moby, Zero 7, Jean Jacques Smoothie 2 People. Stuff like Limp Bizkit and Castles in the sky didn't come back until the weekend.
  3. Fab! I'm not too dissimilar in being bound down with work. So it will just be in my free time I'll look to chuck on some shows. I'll pick through them bit by bit.

  5. I understand message boards aren't what they used to be, but does this place still get checked on from time to time? Only reason is I'm probably going to raid my old hard drives and such to see if I can plug some missing shows on here. Mostly mid 00s towards the end of his Saturday shows which I recorded back then. I have uploaded the show which was cut short due to the death of the Queen Mother in 2002. But it's still sitting in red pending.

  7. This has been shared on Jules' Facebook Group. And I wanted to bring it up on here too. It's a mixcloud link so not sure if anyone is any good at sourcing the original audio from it to archive. But it's the show that lasts an hour then gets cut off with some chillout obit songs due to Queen Mother dying.
