CDJ problems?

Has anyone else experienced problems on their CDJ's not playing certain brand CD-R's?

I recently bought some (admittedly cheap) sony CD-R's and burnt some tunes as i normally did. But the CDJ took about 10 seconds to read the CD, sometimes it didnt read it at all.

I then went and bought some Verbatim CD-R's which i normally use and they work fine with no problems.

I have CDJ800MK2's. Has anyone else experienced this?

Did i not burn the CD right? Or do they just not like these CD's?

All my other CD's which are various brands work fine and every time.

I use Nero 6 and have sony blank cds (£10 for 50)

Thats what i use, and it sounds like those are the CD's i bought! It's the only time i used those CD's and the only time when my CDJ's would'nt read a cd. highly annoying. I'm glad i found out now rather than played out in a club with them. I was compiling a mix last night and got 40 mins in when the SOny CD would just keep stopping after about 8 seconds...

Personally, I very often buy the sony CDs and have found no problems specific to manufacturer. I tend to burn my CDs at 24x speed as I have heard that a lower burn speed can help avoid dodgy discs. I have to say though that I have never got on with Nero and in the past its been a nightmare even getting the disks to finish burning properly. This was definately the software rather than hardware as other programs work fine.

I use Roxio Easy Media Creator which has never failed on me before so perhaps try a different program.

I have CDJ-800's as well, one MK1 and one Mk2 and have recently had to send the Mk2 back for repair after it kept stopping mid-way through a track. Pioneer replaced the laser unit under warantee and now it works fine.

So there are a few possibilities I guess. Hope you manage to work out where the problem lies.

Not that I have CDJs so I wouldn't know but you sure you're burning the CD as a bog-standard audio CD and not an mp3 one? Should be able to read both but I know a lot of (admittedly older) CD players get a bit confused sometimes... so best to make it as simple as possible for your player to read.

Not all CD-R's are compatible with certain types of CD, this just seems a case of incompatibility between players and the branded CD.

The majority of the time you get what you pay for, I bought some cheap unbranded discs and you can really tell the difference between those and branded CD's (they take longer to burn and are far more prone to skipping).

We've had problems when using equipment where I DJ. They've got cdj1000's and a pioneer all in one cd and mixing unit. The CDJs aren't too bad although twice have totally stopped playing in the middle of a tune.

The pioneer all in one unit is prone to not reading some brands, but to be honest I don't think it's anything to do with the CDs being a better brand than others as some of the cheaper cds read better. Not sure what the prob is to be honest!

i suspect this might be the case. Nero sometimes doesnt burn a disc properly. I shall try this program and burn at a lower speed to see if that helps...

Next time a burn some cd`s ill try a lower speed, one more thing I have the CDJ 1000 mk3, are there cd`s specifically for mp3 use?

How does everyone organise there tunes? I have genre cd`s, I burn 2 of each and have roughly 40 - 50 tracks per cd, i put so many onto cd as i feel thats the advantage to cd`s (not having to lug around record boxes) and in one cd pouch you can have 1000+ tracks at any one time.

I burn using iTunes a lot, never had much of a problem with CDs I've burnt through there. Prefer to use it as it's good for organising music.

Do you do this on a Mac or Windows PC? whenever i burn CDs with itunes on my PC they never play back properly on my CDJs. If I buy tracks off itunes store i have to burn onto CD and then rip them back to the PC as MP3 which I then burn to CD again and they play fine... most frustrating

I only burn as normal audio CDs, not MP3 as I think it would be more reliable and better sound quality. The CD player has less processing to do with a straight audio CD as it doesn't have to decode the MP3 as it plays. Plus I only have one CDJ-800 MK2 and a MK1 (the Mk1 doesn't play MP3).

It is certainly advantageous to have loads of tunes on one disc but personally I prefer to burn 6 to 8 tracks per CD, 2 copies of each and organise simply as house or trance. This makes it easy to print labels for the CDs with all the track info on - much easier to organise and find tunes in my experience than making a paper insert with a list of 40 - 50 tracks. However its all personal preference, there is no right way. I still save alot of space and can transport a great deal more tunes with 6 to 8 tracks to a CD than when I used vinyl.

Good stuf Basile - how about labelling your cds? I got a few hundred to burn cos I still aint completely digitised my old vinyl collection? I think Im gona label em with a printer though- keep the formality :)

The same problem happens with me on one cdj only doh, sometimes takes a few seconds to read the cd and sometimes frezzes and starts flashing in the middle of a song

This happened to me.. If its under warrantee get it sent back to Pioneer... one of their UK repair centres that specialise in their DJ products. I went this route, phoned up the repair centre direct and they had the player picked up by courier next day. Replaced the laser and its been fine since.

how long did they have it before you got it back?

Unfortunately it did take a couple of weeks as they had to order the part. But it was still better to get it fixed in the long run. If its under warantee it wont cost you anything so may as well get it checked out.

On the suibject of lasers, they're sensitive bastards - it just takes a knock and it can send it out of kilter - I had a dodgy laser on my MD player when I first got it - you get your disc spinning but you could hear the laser can't shift across to the right location. Got a free replacement but should have cost about 100 quid.

The temperamental laser also lied to me by not writing the TOC (Table Of Contents) on my MDs properly after recording when it said it had done so correctly. This gives "Disc Errors" - meaning you can neither read nor erase the disc, rendering tyhe contents and the disc itself completely unusable... I kept them though and my top-spec MD deck happily erased the contents for me :)
