2007 for Jules...

After speaking to Simon Patterson on Thurs, he mentioned that 2007 is the busiest year as a DJ Jules has had in his career to date pretty much.

Do people think that this is an indication that dance music's popularity is increasing again? If so, what measures would you like to see record labels taking in terms of the products they sell to electronic music fans and clubbers? Also, is there anything that particularly UK clubs could do in order to further support the music and clubbing scene as a whole? I think as a whole, what with numbers at nights like J Sunday, Armada and Cream being at record highs, it suggests that the more commercial side of dance music is flourishing again whilst the more underground nights are beginning to struggle a bit. It would just be nice if people bought tracks to support artists who could then develop the music even more!

What do you (& Patterson) mean by 'busy'. I gather in terms of gigs, but this year Jules has only made less than a handful of tracks and comparing that to his Hi- Gate era and when he went Hans Solo on Proven Worldwide, he seemed to be rather busy then, which probably explained why the deadlines on those albums went over.

I think in terms of music support, download stores have really hit the nail on the head and I know more commercial artists (even pop music) do not seem to be getting hit by flumping sales - they seem to be getting richer!

This is something I was thinking about this week after reading Jules' diary and looking at his 'Club Dates' section. This months diary he says the following:

"Judgement Sundays has been enjoying its busiest year to date, and 15th July was the most packed event so far this season. The crowd quality has got better year-by-year. Because it’s a well-known fact that Ibiza is more expensive than other Mediterranean destinations, increasingly the island attracts hardened music-heads and experienced party goers only… in their droves. There were more than 4000 in Eden.....".

In August Jules is playing at no fewer than 18 events. The obvious factor of the summer resort events is boosting this figure but even still, thats some going. On only two nights he's playing two gigs.

The rise of dance music is definitely a good thing but personally as a scene I think it better suits the 'underground' factor rather than being a totally commercial. It ruins it for me to walk into a shop to hear that wicked track you heard in the club on Friday being played on the radio. Some people may totally disagree but thats my opinion.

I'm in agreement with you Robin that supporting artists through single sales will only help boost their status and ability to produce bigger and better but at what cost? The dance music scene got a bit full of itself in the early 00's with some of the 'superclubs' holding various nights across the country on the same night and having regular north/south nights (Ooo, there we go again with the north/south thing ;) ). This ultimately caused the dance music scene to shoot itself in the foot and to an extent, these nights crashed and burnt.

In my opinion the dance music scene is at such a good state at the moment. Some of the tracks coming out at the moment are of very good qualityand as stated, the club nights (especially on the white isle) are booming.

Do we really want to push the boundaries and yearn for higher capacities, more records and more exposure to the big-name DJ's?

In my opinion, if it aint broke, dont fix it. :) Hey, thats only my opinion and I'm sure many of you will disagree but this board would be a boring place if we all agreed all of the time.

Aza, I should have stated I meant gigs wise rather than production and gigs. I don't think Jules has had the time to devote himself to production duties being as he's not in the UK an awful lot and his Ibiza studio is quite basic to say the least!

Uber, good points there. The music scene has quite a few fundamental flaws in it at the moment in terms of the business aspect of things but hopefully the busy nature of clubland, particularly with dance music will help to address these problems. I personally though don't have any issues in tracks being played in shops, hair/beauty salons and the like. If it means it entices someone to venture to a club in the evening as a result, thats an extra clubber who may want to buy a compilation, album or a few singles. I don't think the industry should aim to be putting out more releases but continue to concentrate on uping the quality of the current output. There are only a handful of producers, in my opinion, who may get a bit full of themselves but for the vast majority, they're hard workers with the sole intention of creating block rockin beats, killer riffs and dancefloor destroyers!

Another thing I was speaking to Simon about is that I have this massive gut instinct/feeling in the water, that trance will soon make a big comeback. Listening to a lot of the funky house that is around and on daytime radio, the tracks borrow a lot from more trance orientated records. The Yves La Roc track 'Rise Up' has a riff which would easily fit the trance sound plus arrangements by the Freemasons on these Beyonce mixes are nothing short of trancy in terms of build ups, drops etc. I think a lot of people who dig the more housey scene are put off by faster dance music styles however this is changing methinks!

Thanks for your views by the way, hopefully this may be an interesting topic and raise some good conjecture!

i thought at the start of the year that over the next 2 years trance will start to be THE sound in clubland again. It's like the late 90's all over again.

We're starting to get the quality and melody back again. This year the trance scene is definately bubbling again and ibiza number are increasing again. I predict that either next year or the year after, it will be another 1999.

We all know that dance music tends to go in circles and you get the feeling that the 00's music cycle has pretty much emulated the 90's music cycle i.e dance being popular at the start of the decade, then about 3-6 years in it loses it's way to indie, then toward the latter half of the decade dance becomes big again.

I dont think Minimal can continue to be the big sound for much longer as i dont feel there's any real substance to it. It's too disposable and too arty for its own good.

Some good points raised, this board certainly has an educated clientel.

As far as summer resorts go I'd say them hitting their busiest numbers could be due to the fact that there is a Eurpean heatwave & up to this point it's been a terrible summer here in Britain, though we don't dominate the market in Ibiza us Brits contribute a lot to it & if the weather is good elsewhere summer holiday makers usually head abroad.

Jules seems to be extremely busy this year, but then he's always very busy. He seems to be 100% committed to playing all over the world in a way not many other DJs are & this is very commendable.

As far as Trance as a whole goes I don't think we will see the 1999-esque total commercialisation, as Robin quite rightly mentioned it's all about diversity now. Genres borrowing from one another & if this continues then it will be the housey-electro infused tracks that cross over. I don't think we will see really big underground tracks finding their way into the charts unless they have a major vocal or mass crossover appeal which DJs like Tiesto & PvD can bring.

I don't anyone will wana listen to my particulat brand of progressive in a hair salon anytime soon ;)

I was so empassioned I was typing too fast, it's probably down to the fact that i have to concentrate so much on my dissertation with grammar, etc that I get on here & release all the mistakes I have been blotting out all day. My spelling is ok i just seem to miss out words a lot
