Anyone else going to this? Looks a pretty hard lineup but still worth a look for Jules, Marcel & John Askew. Making the trip down for the weekend. Not sure about the venue as I've never been there before. It's a 'Liquid' so it'll probably be crap and full of chavs but what the hell.

Yeah of course! I'll give it the full Dave Pearce Dance Anthems 'Club Scout' report! They usually pick a right bunch of odd sorts to undertake the 'Club Scout' job. The dance party at the Don Valley Bowl feat DP, Picotto & Fergie was funny for that as the club scout was like "It's all going off so get your arses down here now". Classy ^_^ .

Nice one - look forwrad to hearing about it, they've had some decent line-ups since its been in Pompey but I know what you mean, I've been put off going due to the chav factor. I mean Slinky in Bournemouth had it's nights where it was a chav fest but you used to be able to deal with it there...or maybe I'm just getting old hehe!! Be good if some of the old crew are there, used to love Slinky back in 1999-2001, had some stupidly good nights there, back when you would get Tiesto, Jules and ferry on the same night :D Aah the memories.....

Slinky are moving again. They've decided to make this the last at Portsmouth and have cancelled the rest of their gigs their this year. They're set to make a "big announcement" in the new year.

I've a feeling it'll return to The Opera House because rumours are, that place has struggled since it changed its music policy and booted Slinky out last year.

Aah mate - I've just seen that on the Slinky site but the thought of it going back to Opera House is awesome. I agree it hasn't done as well since Slinky left and despite the owners saying there won't be any dance nights they have had hardcore & dnb nights so far....if it goes back to OH I'll be making trips down from Brighton that's for sure!!!

Also seen the set times, Jules is doing 11.30-1am so deffo a pre-record for the first new show.....

Yeah I noticed that too. I suspect that the first month or so of shows will be pre-recorded because Jules's gigs had already been confirmed before Radio 1 announced that the schedule was being changed.

From now on, I would imagine that Jules would work his gigs around his radio commitments - unless of course, radio 1 will be going back to giving him live broadcasts :D

Well, this was certainly an eventful night to say the least!

The night started off on an absolute downer as just as we were gettin in the car to make the hour journey to Pompey my mates face totally dropped followed by an "oh s***". He'd forgotten to put the parking pass in the window of the car and as a result, we'd been clamped  . We never planned to get there at 9 but we hoped to leave at 8:30. We rang up the number on the ticket to be informed it'd cost £125 to have the clamp removed! The guys came wthin 10min and released us.

Upon arriving in Pompey we got totally lost looking for the venue and did several laps of the city.

The venue looked pretty nice from outside and there was hardly any cue but straight away some chavs started having an argument with the bouncers and it nearly kicked off. Not a good omen for a peaceful night.

The venue was a bit strange really as it had a round dancefloor encircled by a walkway with series of small alcoves containing tables and sofas. Being a Liquid venue its obviously designed with a view to drinking rather than dancing. The audio setup was reasonable for a glorified bar and didn't leave that awful ringing in your ears that bad systems cause.

We were late into the venue because of the clamp and getting lost and got to see about 30min of John Askews set whilst we had a couple of beers. He was playing pretty full on already but I guess if your following Lee Haslam then your not going to get away with anything else.

We didnt really bother having a bop until Jules started.

Jules was by far the best DJ of the night and played a host of his current favorites including: JJ - Laid Bare, Tom Day - Whisper, Ayla (Danny Nightingale rmx), Fred Baker v Greg Nash - Atlantic City, Razorlight - Las Americas (the chavs loved this. Doesn't do it for me), Marcel Woods - Lemon Tree, Gossip - Standing in the Way of Control (JJ Trance rmx). There were loads others but you all know the tracks he's playing at the moment so there's no point in listing them all.

There were quite a lot of young chav types in the venue and numerous individuals were escorted out during the night. There were loads of people being sick in the toilets and it fecking stunk. What is it with all sickyness at the moment. Crasher @ Magna was the same.

During Jules' set some absolute arsehole decided to try and climb onto the small stage containing the DJ setup and amps. There was a fence of sorts at the edge of the stage to stop people doing this but he scaled it and in the process managed to grab hold of a small lighting rig setup on a free standing tripod pole. He tippled this over and it fell back onto the table with all decks on. It was very close to wiping everyting out.

In fairness I'd have done the same but Jules flipped. He went for this bloke but there was an amp in the way so he couldn't get at him properly. I don't know whether he was going to whack him but he had to be held back by some of the other guys on the stage. He went mental at this bloke. Like I said, I'd have done the same.

The security took ages to act on this, by which time I think the bloke had made off. Total arsehole.

Marcel Woods was 5 min late so Dav Gomrass who wasn't actually on the bill got one record!! He dropped 'Red, Blue, Purple' to much applause. Wicked track but then Marcel Woods turned up and stopped it. I got a bit annoyed with that during the night. Every single DJ stopped the previous DJ's last track by either a spinback or simply pressing pause with the brake on the CDJ set to slow so that you get that vinyl power-down effect.

If I see Marcel Woods on a lineup for any future events I'm not going to make an effort to see him. This set was the final straw of my patience for his track selection. Advanced, Monotone, Greece 2000, Lemon Tree were all played. This has been discussed before by us so I wont go into it but it's just so boring and predictable. As tidy as his mixing was most of the tracks he played were pretty bland. He doesn't seem to be interested in interacting with the crowd either. He hardly looked up during the set and only once or twice interacted. Sorry Marcel but you'd get 5/10 for that set. :(

Kim Ayres was reasonable but played loads of tracks with this cheesy high pitched vocals in resembling DJ Sammy type music. Some good tracks though.

Alex Kidd impressed me. For anyone that hasn't seen him before you certainly have to rely on your energy reserves to dance to his sets. I saw him at a Gods NEC event a number of years ago but not since. Technically he's very competent and is a bit of a nutter to be fair. You've gotta see him to understand this.

Played DK - Murder was the Bass, Lethal Industry (unknown hard remix) amongst others. Finished the night with Scot Project - FM (Feeling Me).

There were way too many chavs in there for my likeing and they were acting like total knobheads. Loads of them kept putting their heads in the big floor mounted speakers  ????? Its as if most of them were on their first night ever at a club. Doing that awful jumpy dance stuff where they just wipe everbody out in a 10m vicinty. There were only a handful of what I'd call 'proper' music fans or 'clubbers' as some may call them.

All in all it was a good night that was saved by Jules' set. If hadn't been on the bill then it'd have been an average night.

It does annoy when chavs are numerous at a clubbing event that you're really up for. Don't get me wrong new clubbers are great it's nice to see new people there, but when the idiots go in there with the intention of getting smashed & making a tit of themselves it is annoying. The worst I've known was back at Gods a few years back when they all descended cos it was PvD's first set for 18months. They'd obviously heard 'For An Angel' & thought it would all be like that.

I heard so many of the tools shouting 'play somethin we know' as he was getting into his stride, it almost made me glad that he played a banging tech-trance set with no obvious 'classics'

Still sounds like Jules kinda saved the night mate, I haven't seen him for ages but wouldn't mind catching him again soon on the basis of the reviews he's been getting lately

i do feel sorry for ya Uber, i know exactly what you experienced mate. Although its not really fnny i can't help but rise a wry smile - its really makes me chuckle how musically uneducated a lot of people are! The usual 'chav' always thinks they have some sort of right to smash into people & generally do what they want (in the process making themselves look like a complete tit to you or i).

I suspected the night would be as it happened due to it being at a 'Liquid' - theres one in roth mate, the last time i went there i was about 17, lol.

I try to steer very clear of clubs/bars with idiots in, the more underground the better i say!

I would love to see Jules belt a chav, would be absoloutly brilliant :D

Thanks for that awesome report mate - no wonder Slinky are moving again, I don't think any club in Pompey could hold a decent dance/trance night with all the chavs around, move it to Brighton, then I'd be made up ;) hehe!

Let us know if you hear any more rumours about where it might end up. Hoping Jules will be back at the Honey soon as haven't seen him for a while either, still loving his sets from Global Gathering & Planet Love B) Maybe some of the more local board peeps (are there any??) could come down for a meet up?

It did make me chuckle how they were making such a big deal of the fact that it's the last one in Pompey. Who cares? It's not as if they've been there for ages. They only started at that venue in July and on the website they [slinky] comment how it's such a wicked venue. It was a poor venue as because there is a walkway all around the dancefloor people try and continue this route by walking the complete circle straight through the crowd right at the front. Got slightly tiresome having to continually move for drunken chavs.

I just dont get the whole putting your head right into the human sized speakers. All their mates were stood around laughing at each other doing it. This went on all night!! Freaks. If I was one of the DJ's (Alex Kidd preferably as he was playing really hard), I'd crank the bass right up when they did that. It'd blow their eardrums.

The Slinky promoters kept claiming how there would be some very big news this week about the future of the club so keep your eyes peeled  .

As an event holder, Slinky are pretty consistent in their lineups and I can't remember having anything other than a wicked night (even last Friday with the chavs!!). Since I started going whilst I was at uni I've had some wicked memories.

It'd be a shame for them to go down the road of using Elements/Liquid type venues as apart from the fact they attract the less 'classy' clubbers, the venues are more so designed with a view to drinking and pissed up dancing to pop music.

Any venue that is a Liquid/Oceana or anything to do with a chain such as Luminar leisure is gonna be rammed full of Chavs, its all they know. It does my head in how they barge into you and give you that "what are you looking at" attitude. They really are clueless!! As Bjorn said the more underground the less chance of a Chav!!!

After dinner Pete and I shot over to Portsmouth for Slinky, accompanied by my father in law Roy, who’s in his sixties but was still up for a big night out. I’m not sure whether I’ll be quite so game when I reach his age. Since its move from Bournemouth Slinky has hosted monthly events at Liquid in Portsmouth, which have been hugely successful. Unfortunately their success has caused the venue’s management to attempt renegotiation of the deal. The two had reached an impasse regarding the terms of their agreement, and this would be the last Slinky event at the club. What a shame- it was sold out, the venue was outstanding (particularly for a leisure chain owned club) and the atmosphere kicked it big time. For the second Friday in succession I span on the same bill as Holland’s Marcel Woods, with John Askew playing as well. During my set a drunken clubber tried to climb into the dj booth, knocking over a large and heavy bit of lighting rig that narrowly missed me. I was none too amused, and personally frogmarched him in the direction of security who ejected the fella via the nearest exit. Apart from that adrenalin filled moment it was the best Portsmouth night I’ve ever done. I hope Slinky settle on an equally good venue as a replacement.

 Adrenaline filled moment!! Probably Grey Goose fuelled too!! I saw the pictures of this on 'Dont Stay In'. Jules is proper going for him.

If you scroll through the guys photos, the ones with the 'incident' are at the front.

Those are pretty good clarity pics from behind the decks. Jules rates this venue in his weekly event. I have to disagree from a clubbers point of view. The venue allows too many people to essentially 'get lost' into the alcoves and other smaller bars. The venues where people have no choice other than to be in the main room close to or on the dancefloor are best. Passion is a good example of this and in a way, Gods. Ok there's the upstairs bit but the dancefloor is always rammed because if you go downstairs, your on the dancefloor.
