Tremor
Ive not used Nero to be honest. I use Adobe Audition and with that when you click save as... there is an "options" icon next to the filename. If you click this when saving to MP3 you can specify the bit rate. Perhaps try looking for a similar icon, or properties settings somewhere. 96k seems very low so I would have thought it can be changed.

Chrissie Brown
I use "Audacity" and l think you can choose what bitrate you want, however l don't use it very often so not too sure. When l checked on some of the recordings l have done they are mostly 128 birate and some are saved as a wav file which is better quality but uses more space. Simcut
Audacity / Adobe Audition / Cool Edit Pro are all good.
Aza
I use this and always have Great bit of kit mate... Don't save it as MP3 once you've completed the mix. Save it as WAVE and then I use a program called CDEX to convert it from WAVE to an MP3 bitrate of my choice. I usually encode to variable bitrate...
