Aza Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 Ok guys... I have a fairly big sound system (1000w) and the speakers are rather phat and large. I had them wall mounted and have had them up there for about three years now on speakers stands: Yesterday, I returned home to find the left speaker randomly off the wall. It had fallen off the wall and crashed into the two corners wall causing a fair bit of damage. It must've landed against this: and then into this (just above a wall socket): These are the sockets that remain: I am faced with a problem now. I'm not going to risk putting them back up again. Have done a fair bit of DIY on this place and wall sockets are everywhere. That part of the wall is certainly weaker now and I have to cover up a fair bit of the wall. It is plasterboard, what's the best thing I can use for this and above the socket (quite bad )..? There is no space really - within speaker wire reach - to place the speaker so it is gonna have to sit on the window sill for now, but this is going to look a bit tacky and annoying really. Can you buy any old speakers (gonna have to be smaller and sadly less powerful on sound) with speaker wire to plug into my amp/cd player? If not, I've just thought that perhaps I could some PC speakers for my laptop and just plug in my line-in and output when I'm playing through the desktop speakers? Bit miffed to say the least!!! :wall:
Tremor Posted July 15, 2009 Report Posted July 15, 2009 wow thats pretty savage damage there mate - not good. Im not much good with DIY myself to be honest so not sure what to suggest in terms of putting them back on the wall but as you say its perhaps not wise considering you will have weakened that point a bit now. There is no space really - within speaker wire reach - to place the speaker You could always buy some longer speaker cable... this is pretty easily available at hi-fi shops but just dont let them try and sell you any seriously expensive stuff... as long as its not really thin cable it'll be fine. Can you buy any old speakers (gonna have to be smaller and sadly less powerful on sound) with speaker wire to plug into my amp/cd player? It's not necessarily that simple but if you replace the speakers with something smaller but similar in spec it would be fine. For example, if your current system is simple a pair of full range speakers with one paired cable (+ and -) going to each one, then you could get a smaller full range speaker with same connections and it would work. Problem is if you use a less powerful speaker the amp may be too powerful so you would need to be careful of blowing them. It should be ok but just start with the volume at zero when u first connect up and slowly turn it up. You may find a much lower volume setting will be much louder through less powerful speakers but you wont be able to keep turning them up as much. If I were you I'd try and get some longer cable and work out a way of re-positioning what you've got... Will have another think and jot any more advice I can think of later... gotta run now for dinner tho..

Maplin's and specialist stores charge silly money for it, whereas Wilkinson's charge about 30p a metre. Job done
Neuro Posted July 16, 2009 Report Posted July 16, 2009 You'll need to buy a new (bigger) speaker mount with larger brackets to take the weight I guess, but funny how it decided after 3 years to fall down! Bit of Polyfiller for the time being though?
Spin Doctor Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 Have to ask, why do you need a 1k rig in your room?!
Aza Posted July 18, 2009 Author Report Posted July 18, 2009 It was bought for me by my very kind mother when I was about 16 as a birthday present for when I just started Dj'ing  Have have it with me ever since and it's been with me through many moves and served a great asset!
