Advice please

Recommended Posts

Apologies, this may go on a bit, but if you can bear with me, I'd really appreciate anyones input.

Basically, I havent dj'd in 6yrs, when I sold my decks and sold/lost all my vinyl. I've never uesd cd decks. If I'm honest, dance music hasn't inspired me in the same way it did when I first started back in 1997. I've recently come to the point where I can probably afford decks now, and its really tearing me apart whether to go for it or not.

Now though, although I'm still not overly enthusiastic about todays music, some of it is starting to give me that ITCH. Also, the prospect of being able to play those obscure white labels Jules played years ago, have now got a name and i can hunt for them, thanks to this site, which is probably just as exciting for me.

First of all, I've no idea how to go about building up my old collection digitally again. Will it cost me a fortune? Where do I go? Secondly, I've only got a crappy laptop, crap broadband with a monthly limit, will this make it nearly impossible when it comes to downloading?

Secondly, has dance music moved on too much, is there any point? The people who I know from back then are all into production etc. I've no interest in going down that road, nor the Serato/Ableton road for financial reasons, so is there any point in me trying now?

I miss the buzz I used to get from dj'ing, even in my bedroom, playing to a few mates, so much, nothings replaced that. But am I too far removed from it to waste my time and money on it now?

Any thoughts welcome please.

GO FOR IT!!!

Just do what you wanna do,

It's better to regret something that you tried than something you wish you'd done!!

I had a long time off while having some babies and thought I may aswell sell my decks, but luckily never got round to it although they spent a couple of years on top of the wardrobe.

I love them again now though, not as much use as before not with 3 kids etc, but I still love using them when I do ands I am a bit rubbish too.

I can sort of feel for your situation mate. I have spent the past year pondering over the idea of buying CDJ's and have spent endless evenings researching different sorts. I think if you have the time and the money you really should go with it. It won't take you anymore than 2/3 months to rebuild a worthy collection of music digitally (my hard-drive broke December last year and I managed to download most of my music back in a matter of months). The internet and laptop speeds might hold you back a little but aslong as you don't let that bother you then by all means go forth and enjoy!

Thanks. You're both thinking the exact same things as me. I really want to do it, for such selfish reasons though, if that makes sense. The only other point is, trying to justify to my girlfriend blowing roughly two grand on a hobby, on something of which she has no interest or passion. Her favourite artist is Bruce Springsteen!!! (theres only 6 days age difference between us before you wonder! Different upbringing altogether just!)

btw LMAO!!! I hate Bruce Springsteen. But actually we all like different things. Firstly though, don't spend so much, secondly treat her to something fairly expensive but for her, and thirdly I am the kind of person who thinks that a partner loves you for who you are and if having a hobby mixing and playing dance tunes is you, then she will love you.

My partner is finally reaising that despite him not wanting to go clubbing anymore, I am not letting up on it, he either has to come too or get over it, he wouldn't want me to be unhappy and I would be unhappy if I could never go out and dance again.

Bribery works a treat! :) Or have it as a birthday come Xmas pressie, we're not wel off, but we find a way. He wants expensive stuff for the PC, and I want records and a holiday in Ibiza, on my own!

Or you could beg?

Ha ha! Ah don't worry, she's my priority. Any deck tomfoolery will come after she's well looked after.

Although I'm sure you've heard; 'so its basically playing two records at the same time? Yeah. Ace'

I took a break back in 2003 for about a year, cos i was uninspired. Then around 04 i started to get the itch again, after hearing Eric Prydz "Call On Me" for the first time believe it or not - and after splitting up with an ex. I should never have stopped djing, it just kinda happened. Now i have vowed not to ever give it up for the sake of someone else. If thats being greedy, so be it, it makes me happy. Anyway, i then started to get into the tech sounds that were around. I never sold my technics though.

I had forged a new sound for myself, away from trance, more house based. Around 05/06 i had loads of local gigs, but when i got my current job in 07 i had to ease up on them - i work 3 weekends out of 5, and my line of work is the sort that don't appreciate me hanging around or djing in, dingy, druggy clubs playing "drug music". So now, i have to get gigs out of town.

I say, go for it, why not? The next headache you will have, is what equipment to get? Traktor/Serato or go down the CDJ route?...Thats a whole new topic my frien'.

I'll definately be going the cdj route (initially anyway) if I go for it.

I think I'll actually miss the physical aspect of vinyl, so I'm assuming the cdj 800s are a minmum requirement (they have the sort of vinyl imitation platter dont they?)??

Anyway, it'll be a month or two before I do anything. Just wanted a bit of feedback. Thanks all
