Briggsy
Judging by Tom's "Radio 1 Schedule Change" thread, most of us think that Radio 1 have made mistakes by changing a system that works. They've also made very massive mistakes in the past - in fact, i'd say that things have never really recovered from the days of Jules having two shows (Friday & Saturday) and Danny Rampling being sacked. Personally, i'd shift ALL of the urban shows to 1xtra. 1xtra was created for urban music - so lets keep Radio 1's weekend nights output to Dance. Friday would be the more downtempo day - easing people into the weekend with some slower beats to listen to as they get ready to go out. Saturday would be the more upbeat day with people still on a high from the night before - and possibly getting geared up for another night. This would be my Radio 1 dance line-up: Fridays: 6pm til 9pm - Pete Tong - He may no longer be a regular club DJ, but he's the voice of Friday nights on Radio 1 - he's informative, easy-listening and knows his stuff. 9pm til 11pm - Lottie - Not one of the most respected House DJs around, but she was superb on Radio 1 during her stints in the past, so I reckon she should return. Easy listening and plays good tunes. 11pm til Midnight - International Intruder feature - Each week, a different international House/Electro/Breaks/Minimal Techno (or similar) guest DJ such as Eric Prydz or Roger Sanchez steps into the Radio 1 studio to host a show. Midnight til 2am - The Downtempo Essential Mix - Essential mixes, in its current format, covering the House/Electro/Breaks and generally slower, calmer genres. Saturdays: 5pm til 7pm - Jon O'Bir - Radio 1 had never really covered "proper" Trance. There have been lots of DJ's such as Jules and Eddie that play some Trance - but never a DJ that plays out-and-out Trance. Jon O'Bir is still young, British, and covers everything from Progressive Trance, to full-on, peak time, Melodic Trance. 7pm til 9pm - Eddie Halliwell - Eddie Halliwell returns to bridge the gap between Melodic Trance and Tech-Trance/Hard Trance/Techno. 9pm til 11pm - Kutski - Kutski takes things even harder in a similar format to his current show. 11pm til Midnight - International Intruder feature - Each week, a different international Trance/Hard Techno/Hard House (or similar) guest DJ such as Cosmic Gate or Paul van Dyk step into the Radio 1 studio to host a show. Midnight til 2am - The Uptempo Essential Mix - Essential mixes, in its current format, covering the Trance/Techno/Hard House and generally faster, harder genres. Sundays: 7pm til 9pm - Dave Pearce's Dance Anthems - It worked well for years, and there's only one man for the job. It must return! 9pm til 11pm - Judge Jules presents... In New Artists We Trust - After kick-starting many people's careers (such as Michael Woods and Fabio Stein) by vowing to support tunes and artists until they're signed, Judge Jules hosts a weekly show committed to featuring new producers and DJ's that he feels are destined for a strong future in club land. 11pm til 1am - Annie Mac & Judge Jules's sack of s*** show - Judge Jules and Annie Mac put all their crap bootlegs and mash-ups together to create two hours of the worst music you could ever hear. Its a crap listen - but its guaranteed to send you into a deep sleep - making you feel nice and refreshed ready to return back to work the following morning. OK, so I was joking about Annie Mac & Judge Jules's sack of s*** show - but the rest stays
Moonman
Friday; 1800-2100hrs; Pete Tong, for reasons above. 2100-2300hrs; Dave Spoon; Did well on the In New DJ's We Trust feature. I was a regular listener of his, he played a fair few tune earlier than most last year that went on to do big things. 2300-0100hrs; Live feature, recorded from a club somewhere live. 0100-0300hrs; i agree, some sort of show where its chill out/ambient. Saturday; 1700-1900; some sort of Dance Anthems show, bugger it, give it to Vernon Kaye, if it stops him trampling over other shows. 1900-2100hrs; Judge Jules; it's what he does best, warming up the nation for a saturday night. My favourite shows were Julesy's saturday night shows ( i know most on here preferred his old Friday night shows). Its the perfect soundtrack to get ready to go out. He got the balace between house/trance and shouts just right. It always used to get me hyped for a night out. 2100-2300hrs; Alex Kidd; of the hardstyle DJs, he one of the best, technically not as good as Kutski, but i think his sets have more flow, he's very versatile too. Picking up from Jules banging mix and taking it harder. 2300-0100hrs; X-Press2; Radio 1 should nab these, their show on Kiss is pretty damn good. Not much chat, good music and most of it mixed. They have a great dark, drugged up sound, perfect for those after party type situations. 0100-0300hrsThe Essential Mix. I also agree, the BBC has 1Xtra for urban music. Radio 1 should be left for pop/indie/rock during the day and dance over the weekends. And it should stay that way. If the BBC think urban music is where it's at, and have made a station for it, then they should use it. You dont hear pop being played on Classic FM do you? Spin Doctor
Personally, i'd shift ALL of the urban shows to 1xtra. 1xtra was created for urban music - so lets keep Radio 1's weekend nights output to Dance. Bit of a silly thing to say reall. Regardless of what 1xtra is for, Radio 1 is supposed to be the 'cool trendy youth' station. As such, you can't deny that 'urban' has a claim to Radio 1's remit. Think of it another way, say that they started a BBC station dedicated to dance, you'd probably still want to see the important dance shows on Radio 1. This is ignoring the obvious political/social aspects to such a move. Edit: gonna put this in the other thread about Radio 1 instead as it's more relevant there...Sorry to cross contaminate threads. :whistling:

If a station is made to specially cater for urban, hen thats what it should be. If not, then why bother with it in the first place? And "cool trendy youth" doesnt just mean urban music either. This is ignoring the obvious political/social aspects to such a move. Music is music, that is all. if you want Classical, you get Classic FM, if you want talk radio, you have Radio 4, if i wanted urban music i'd listen to 1Xtra. Politics, gender, creed, culture or whatever else have nothing to do with music or the way we should perceive it. Or role reversal time here, why should Urban get it own station? Not naggin', just putting some thoughts out there my man.
Quadrant
Good point Spin Doctor. Although I'm bery anti-urban, I accept that there needs to be this music niche on Radio 1 so it should have its place. Quite what 1xtra is for is another matter altogether. My ideal: Fridays 7-9pm - Danny Rampling. Still a legend, and actually what I listened to most before by chance I heard Jules play some wonderful melodic stuff afterwards on a Saturday. Loved Rampling's mixes and his new tunes. Why Radio 1 let him go is a mystery. He got me hooked on the house scene well before Jules and his flavour. 9-11pm - Judge Jules. I'm sorry, but it's the slot that was the very best out of everything that has ever been. Screw the Saturday show, just let Jules launch into his stuff with his variety of italian and dutch hard stuff, bizarre german white labels, swedish techno, British drum n bass, French filtered- or chicago house, and obscure but wonderful fluffy belgian trance.... a wonderful mix of dance music which was unrivalled back then and still nothing matches it for mixture and originality. Also must include the obligatory random silly quiz to win CDs, and of course must also have a couple of "master-mixes" before the uninterrupted 30-minute finale. Thank you. 11pm - bed. I have to work on Saturdays so that's fine for me. I'll download the essential mix later online if it's any good, or if I want to explore any new dance avenues or DJs. Erm... that's it. Judge Mental
Haha, I love the term 'Urban', in that its so non specific, and is just basically a more PC way of saying music black people are probably going to prefer. Same as the Mobo's lol
