  1. I got bored of Trance ages ago. The last tune I heard that really blew me away was in 2006 - and that was 'Exactly' by O'Callaghan and Kearney. Since then, everyone has been churning out House/Trance Emery-esque hybrids at 132bpm, Floaty stuff with vocals (everything seems to have meaningless vocals by a high-pitched warbler now) or they've jumped on the "lets produce something with cheesy, stabby synths because the Swedish House Mafia have had success with that sound" bandwagon - for example, Jordan Suckleys new tune. Its horrid. Most producers are all churning out the same sound and trying to copy any other producer that has a bit of success with a specific sound. Its all gone very generic and producers seem to have lost their imagination. They all want to produce for success rather than producing a tune from the heart with a sound that they've come up with themselves.
  2. He's absolutely spot on too - and nobody can say he's being a grumpy old man like Askew or '00' Fleming because Fabio is one of the most laid-back, cheerful, people i've ever met. He Dj'd for me 18 months ago and i've never met anyone so passionate about the music - and he came as the night opened and left after it closed, which is rare for any DJ these days - so that shows just how much the scene has changed for someone to become so pissed off with it in such a short space of time. I particularly agree with this line that he said too: I've said for a while that the DJ Mag poll has had a huge impact on the decline of the dance scene. Talented DJs don't get bookings now - producers do. Most of them are superb producers - but are appalling DJs. Some of them can't beatmatch, some of them can't build a set that flows, some of them can't even get the basics right like phrase matching (Ronald van Gelderen, take note!!) - some can't even do any of that - yet they get high profile gigs because the DJ Mag poll suddenly says that they're the 8th best DJ in the world (even though that vote is based on their productions...) DJs aren't happy with being DJs now. They want to be celebrities. They want to earn £10,000 for a 90 minute set rather than £500. They can't settle with being number 10 in the world - they've got to push to get to number 1 in the world so that they can play a DJ set at the Olympics, have sell-out solo gigs where their fans in pink T-shirts can make hand-hearts at them all night, and have an hour of their productions dedicated to them on MTV. It makes me cringe! These days, artists can be unheard of one minute - and then two years later, be in the top 10 because they've had two or three big productions that have done well and everyone has voted for them in the DJ Mag poll. The majority of them don't even produce their own tunes - they pay someone to do it. That producer gets no recognition for it and probably earns about £200 from it - while the DJ gets all the glory for it and suddenly starts earning thousands on the back of someone elses work. Lazy bastards! Even DJs at our level are starting to pay to play at the Ministry Of Sound just to look bigger than they actually are, or sit on Facebook 24/7 setting up 4 DJ profiles and pestering every 'friend' they have to vote for them just so that they get lots of votes hoping that they can become a career DJ from it (yes, Miss Saforia, people like you!). Its really quite sad.
  3. Great shame. Superb producer, really good (and massively under-rated) DJ - and also one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. http://fabiostein.tumblr.com/post/10386998829/fabiomovingon
  4. Trance Nation 1 by Ferry Corsten will never be beaten. Best Trance CD ever. Clubbed 1 by Jules was superb too (although CD 2 seemed a tad slow and needed pitching up a bit).
  5. Original Instrumental Mix - but I also liked Marcel Woods' effort
  6. Triggered by Tom Baileys reply to Noffs thread saying that he generally prefers podcasts to radio shows these days - to which I agree. So the question is, what podcasts do you regularly listen to? These are the ones I listen to regularly: Bryan Kearney (Kearnage) Indecent Noise David Moleon Dave Pearce I used to listen to podcasts from Jules, Tyas, Richard Durand and Marcel Woods too before they changed their styles. They don't really appeal to me now.
  7. Didn't rate either of them to be honest. We played some of the most boring, predictable football ever under McGhee. Oh, and he bought Mixu Paatelainen I didn't mind Taylor (until he lost the plot towards the end), I didn't mind Dave Jones and I like Mick McCarthy.
  8. I don't remember much of him - so there's probably a reason for that. I think he was a Mark McGhee signing - so that sums it up really. Never rated McGhee at all during his time at Wolves.
  9. Woah! Darren Bazeley! Blast from the past! If I remember rightly, he played at right-back and replaced Kevin Muscat?
  10. Exactly! 2p isn't going to make an impact at all - whereas 20p per litre is. This government pledged to do something about fuel prices - it was one of Cameron's big promises during the debates, and then the coalition announced in the budget that they would stabilize things too - but they haven't. They're targetting the motorists again, just like Labour did, because they know everyone needs their car and have no choice other than to fill up if they want to go from A to B. If they sorted fuel prices out, food prices would come down (or SHOULD come down rather...), transport/distribution companies costs would come down meaning those prices should be passed on to consumers on the High Street - and then that could get people buying and kick-start the economy again. In my opinion, fuel prices are having a major impact on most things at the moment - and until the government reduce their tax and/or force greedy oil companies to cut their prices, the economy isn't going to pick up very quickly. I was glad to see the back of Labour - they were bloody useless. But i've come to the conclusion that this bunch don't really know what they're doing either.
  11. Agreed. 8% is just not on. The same applies to food - the cost of food is spiralling out of control. I bought a tin of corned beef last week for the first time in about a year, and couldn't believe my eyes - I paid £2.18 for it - yet two years ago, a tin of Corned Beed was about 72p. According to the radio last week, fuel is at the lowest its been this year - yet that isn't being passed on to us at the pumps. Its about time the government put pressure on fuel companies to pass these prices on when fuel prices drop - but they won't because they make too much money from it. I'm not really sure where this will all end - but at the moment, fuel prices, food price rises, travelling expenses, etc are increasing at a far greater rate than peoples income - and eventually, this is going to cause a major problem. Not necessarily now - but in 5 or 10 years time. We can't keep dishing out 8% on this, and 6% on that each year, when peoples pay rises (if they are lucky) are 3% and 4% every few years.

    DJ'ING

I always used to find that after a break, my mixing was better than it was before - but I think that is down to my ear problems. After a break, my ears were good to go again for another 3 months - whereas before that, i'd lose the mid-frequencies and tunes would sound mushy and horrid, and mixing them would be trickier. As Tom said, once you've learnt beatmatching, structuring a set, etc, you never lose that ability - I think sometimes the ears are just saying to us "you need a break" and perhaps aren't as 'razor sharp' as they should be - making mixing seem a struggle.
  13. Two reasons I think really. The first reason being that I knew we had to tone the music down at this new venue - but didn't realise just how much until Friday night - so I ended up playing a much slower, uplifting style that wasn't really my cup of tea at all - and I struggled to get into it. Once upon a time, I used to like a bit of everything and i'd play across the board - but these days, it has to be pretty full on to appeal to me. My usual 'full-on bosh' is a definate no-go zone at this new venue. The 2nd reason was because i've now switched to Traktor - and although i've used it a lot at home now, I got nervous using it in a club for the first time. No real reason why - other than because it was the first time i'd used it in a club and was worried something would go seriously wrong. I think Friday reminded me of one of the reasons why I quit DJ'ing last year - I just don't feel Trance enough to play it out any more.
  14. Not too bad thanks mate. A bit quiet - but we've been asked to go back in around 5 weeks to do another because the manager feels that there is potential if he gives us a Saturday night instead. I had an mare on the decks though - by far my worst set ever
  15. Tonight folks Set times: Dan Hill - 10pm til 11.45pm 11.45pm til 1am - Stuart Ferguson 1am til 2.15am - Pete Unique 2.15am til Close - Carl Briggs. Craig London has had to pull out due to illness
  16. You just can't get the staff these days
  17. Ahhhhh, I was looking at the poll title, which didn't have the word 'Ibiza' in it - so I assumed it was on about all of Jules's Essential Mixes he'd ever done. In that case, i'll stick my vote in
  18. I did - Jules's best ever Essential Mix - and I went for his 2001 Retrospective Essential Mix that wasn't in the list above. Or am I still missing something? :ermm:
  19. I quit DJ'ing last year - but still like to listen to a few tunes and dig out some oldies to have a bit of a mix now and again when i'm bored. I'm using Traktor Pro with a cheapo Behringer BCD3000 controller. Its more than good enough for what I need, it costs so much less than CDJs and a mixer - and you can do more with it. I actually prefer mixing on this than I did with decks now.
  20. My favourite was the 'Retrospective' mix from 2001 (it isn't in the list above). It was something different from Jules - and his mixing and tune selection was spot on (as it was back then). Latour - 'Blue' (White Label) Scotti Deep - 'Brooklyn Beats' (White Label) Nalin and Kane - 'Beachball' (FFrr) Katana - 'Erotomania' (White Label) Fye - 'I'm Not The Man I Used To Be' (White Label) Jam and Spoon - 'Stella' (White Label) Leftfield and Lyden - 'Open Up' (Hard Hands) Transformer Z - 'Just Can't Get Enough' (White Label) Lustral - 'Everytime' (Hooj Choons) BBE - '7 Days and 1 Week' (Positiva) Vernon's Wonderland - 'Vernon's Wonderland' (White Label) Mory Kante - 'Yeke Yeke' (FFrr) Hardfloor - 'Acperience' (White Label) Thomas Bangalter - 'Traxxon Da Roxx 2' (Roule) Fatboy Slim - 'Everybody Loves' (Skint) Bug Khan - 'Made In 2 Minutes' (White Label) Rozzo - 'Into Your Heart' (White Label) DJ Hell - 'My Definition' (White Label) Disco Citizens - 'Footprint' (White Label) Golden Girls - 'Kinetic' (Distinctive) Petra and Co. - 'Just Let Go' (White Label) Subliminal Cuts - 'Le Voie Le Soleil' (White Label) Hole In One - 'Hole In One' (White Label) Klatsch - 'God Save The Queen' (White Label) Apart from that, I always felt that Jules's 'Essential Mixes' weren't as strong as some of his live club sets that used to be broadcast on Radio 1. My favourite overall mix from Jules is his set from Sundissentials 3rd Birthday. 01. Flickman - The Sound Of Bamboo [i Am] 02. Hi-Gate - Caned And Unable 03. Charlie Hall - World Downfall Part 1 [Fuse] 04. Perpetual Motion - Keep On Dancing [Positiva] 05. Apache - Starfighter (Hi-Gate Remix) 06. Hi-Gate - Pitchin Original 07. Twice As Nice - Cutting Edge 08. Toca - Miracle 09. Toca - Toca's Miracle 10. Fridge - Angel 11. GD - Choral Reef 12. Armin - Communication 13. Space Brothers - Shine (Commie Remix) 14. X Pact - Delirious [X Trax] 15. Mario Pui - Communication [incentive] 16. Yomanda - Sun Shine 17. Beatbox - Dial M For Mogwai [Kosmo] 18. Spolied And Zigo - More And More 19. Singles And Angles - Submerge 20. Electronic Boutique - Revelation
  21. Good shout on Martin Roth. A very under-rated DJ, and also a really nice guy
  22. Gareth Emery should play a pre-recorded set. We wouldn't have to listen to his shit drunken trainwrecks then
