Hey hey kids,

So i'm going to have a little stab at a report now - can always add to it later. Bjorn has the majority of pics, so will leave those for a minute. Right then, Bjorn came over to mine for about 7pm on Friday (he had to change out of his sandals :P) whilst I was stressing over what I was going to play for my set in the bar downstairs. I had been detained at URN for longer than I'd wanted in the afternoon by having to record a news story for the Pulse (news bulletin), but I had managed to pick up a few more commercial sounding tunes for a bit of crowd control from the record library before I left ;)

I ended up taking most of my CD collection, I really did take far to much for what I played, but I wanted the variety for any situation! Bjorn and myself each had some vinyl for Jules to sign if possible - I was taking my knackered, but playable The Clergy - 'Saints and Sinners' because it represented the 99-00 era of Jules listening for me :) We took a taxi to the studios cos I had to drop off some stuff for a friend on the way too. Whilst I was in the taxi I got a call from Katie and Chris who were on URN at the moment and were going to be covering the goings on from Hu Stu throughout their show until it finished at 9 when they would come down as well for a boogie. Katie is my girlfriend btw, so she def had to come 8-) Anyway, they asked if I would do a brief interview on the phone, quite hard to hear the questions in the taxi though! They asked for my suggestion for a classic radio "Julesism", Chris had thought of a good one, but all I could think of on air was "Just like a headboard, we're banging"!

We arrived with plenty of time before the official opening of the doors at 8 when I was to start playing officially. Laurence, the organiser and president of Hu Stu Hall of Res charged us with checking the sound systems upstairs in the main room where Jules was to be playing - so up we went and gave the decks and CDJ's a go each, to check all wires etc. It was super loud, and we knew would be awesome for Jules later.

But then it was time to get back downstairs to check my own equipment and get on some tunes! The engineering guys at URN were also recording my set, so that was all set up nicely. I'll see if I can yoink it and post up here. Downstairs I had a Pioneer DJM600 which was the mixer that had given me a slight nightmare at the DJ comp I had taken part in weeks earlier - Bjorn gave me some pointers tho and my mixing gradually got a better as I tried to improve the unfamiliar headphone monitoring situation! I started off my set just playing tunes b2b, there was no one there, so just got used to the equipment. Then I moved into housier waters and it seemed that people were liking a more electro sound, so tunes like The Egg and Supermode went down well. I kept it recognisable so I could slip in some more unrecognisable tracks every know and then. Skorpio - Rock Chic went down quite nicely so Dormouse, I hope you are pleased with that! For my second hour I upped the tempo and ventured into more trancy waters, playing tunes like Rock Your Body and As The Rush Comes, before slipping in some more uplifting tunes like Toca Me (In Petto Remix), Alone Tonight and something a bit more banging in the form of Richard Durrand - 'Make Me Scream'. People from the crowd were quite complimentary of the tunes, so that was pleasing, one girl I spoke to wanted lots of Anjuna stuff because her brother is Above and Beyond's driver! I also dropped my 'Greece 643' which Bjorn was loving lol!

I was due to finish at 10, but the next guy on had not turnd up, despite introducing himself to me earlier. By 10:15 I was getting desperate to leave because Laurence confirmed that I would be able to play for 10 mins until Jules came on to the main stage at 10:45 - So i really wanted some time to decide which tunes I was going to play! In the end, I left the decks playing with a copy of Jules' album and a group of us rushed upstairs, Bjorn and others carrying my mountainous mess of CD wallets! I had no time to really decide what I was going to play on the main stage, so it was all about winging it - I checked with the cheesy Dj who was now on in the now packed main room whether he had played Born Slippy yet - so I kept on teasing the crowd with the first bar throughout his last record which was Freestylers - Push Up. The main room featured a stage, so I was raised above the crowd and although it was very smoky, it was great to see lots of people! Definately the biggest crowd i've played to so far. After consulting Bjorn yet again for Allen and Heath mixer advice (just how many have you used matey!!!) I cued up the tune to mix out of Born Slippy and get a nice trance energy going :)

Before Jules then, I played:

Underworld - 'Born Slippy' (JBO)

Unknown - 'Frank Witness' (CDR)

Veracocha - 'Carte Blanche' (Positiva)

I was very excited to see people enjoying Frank Witness, some girls went mental when the Happiness Happening lyrics in the break came in and then plenty of arms in the air when Frank Traxx drops back again. :D

Just before mixing into Veracocha, Jules came on stage and I checked with him that he wasn't playing it later, and he said it was ok (if he truly heard what I'd said that is!). He seemed to enjoy messing around with Veracocha with the effects, so i'm glad i'd decided to use that tune. Myself and Bjorn had backstage access, so we were able to stand on the stage and by the side to watch if we wanted to, but I needed a bounce around, so we rejoined some of my friends for a dance.

From what I remember then, here's what Jules played in no particular order - although predictably he started off with Cherry Whip:

Jason Cortez - 'Saltwater' (White Label)

AJS - 'Obsession Drop' (White Label)

AJS - 'Breathin Drill' (White Label) -----2 x AJS :? - thought myself and Bjorn were loving the break and did funny arm movements to represent the different notes of the bassline lol

K. Sheehan - 'Tick Mode' (White Label)

Kristine Blonde - 'Love Shy' (Electrique Boutique Remix)

Francesco Diaz & Young Rebels - ' Ibiza ' [WAWA Club Mix] (Musica Diaz Toro)

LR - 'Stardisease' (White Label)

Marco V - Red, Blue, Purple

Can't remember much more atm, so hope that Bjorn can remember some more!

Jules played for about 1hr 15-30 mins I think, which, whilst shorted than a normal gig, isn't bad for £3 entry! (or free in my case). So the last bit of the the story obv is the interview with Jules which you can hear tomorrow on my show and I should be able to post here too for those that can't make it. Bjorn also has a video and pics of us! I wasn't too nervous really, probs more running on adrenaline than anything cos of all the dancing and Djing! I couldn't remember some of the questions I had wanted to ask but we chatted on the MD for about 10 mins which I think was more than enough really for a good interview (which shouldn't be too long anyway) and I didn't want to increase the annoyance factor by keeping a microphone constantly in his face! You can hear the results tomorrow - and an embarrassing moment on Bjorn's video of me confusing Motley Crue with SPinal Tap as a comparison to Jules' rockumentary style DVD on the UK release of his new album which he swiftly corrected me on haha! Doh!

I'm sure Bjorn will fill you in with the specifics of what we talked about, I have been writing for ages now it seems so this will be a monster post on my part! But it was great to chat with him and his management and driver who we were talking about the Midlands trance clubbing scene with. It was a great night, and a great way to end my penultimate week at University. Of course, it also provides some great material for my final show tomorrow too, if I can shift this cold! there must have been stuff breeding in the the very humid main room at Hu Stu, i'm feeling very under the weather atm!

I'll add some pics when I upload them! :)

What a brilliant report there Christian, must have been such a buzz and especially as Aza said to end your time at Uni - I'm glad this board's mere existence made it possible! Very much looking forward to Bjorn's report and pics (whom I gather is currently recovering from a heavy few nights -- I couldn't hear half of what you were saying on the phone this morning btw especially near the end, your crap signal! :D  )

Really pleased for you all.

right then, here goes...

First off ,what a report christian, i think u've already put whatever report i can write to shame i tell ya!

Im writing now after just returning home from work - after friday night i had to get up at 9 and get a coach back to derby so that my housemate could drive me and him up to sheffield for my mates 21st b'day - we had a massive party at his house - started drinking at 12!! Went to plug in sheff and saw zane lowe - got back to our mates about 5.30am then got to bed around 6.30am - me and higgzy then had to get up at 10 and drive back to derby cos we were both working at topman/topshop at 12! A nightmare i tell u, and im most certainly suffering now...

Anyway, on with friday!

As christian said i hot footed it over to his place, gave tim a little pre-event call to set the scene for the night as i was walking to christians. As christian said i had to change out of my 'sandals' - however i wish i had kept em on as there were loads of ppl in shorts and flip flops on the night. Anyway after a chat and a sort out of the evening we taxi'd it over to uni while christian was doing his interview over the phone in the taxi i was giggling like a school girl! :D We got to the venue and met lawrence the organiser who swiftly issued us with vip passes (u legend christian, i can't thank u enough for sorting this 8-) ) And we had a butchers at the decks, which was very impressive, full 1210, cdj1000 and djm600/A&H 92 setup in all 3 rooms. We went upstairs to do a little sound check on the decks, having a mess round etc, and the sound engineer wanted to hear some vinyl - of course we had some with us so we banged on 'Whats in your head' and 'oboe song' which sounded brilliant - was a very good soundsystem they had there!

We went and had a nosey round the VIP room which was accessed from behind the decks which had a big plasma screen in it along with comfy chairs, food and a s*** load of booze!

All sorted after a bit of help from me on the mixer front (only know cos that mixer is cheap replica of my mixer, djm600 far superior 8-) )christian kicked off his set playing a few early openers to get the crowd going like joey negro, knarls barcley etc. i kept running off to the VIP room to steal loads of booze, get this - i worked out i spent about £8 for the whole night - a fiver for my return coach to notts and the rest on taxi's! I knicked a f*** load of booze and just kept loading it up behind the decks. Christian - u were lagging behind me big time mate, haha!

As we hit the second hour i noticed there was not one single person in the room a joining the bar where christian was playing, and no one upstairs (that wasn't opened till about 10) - christian pulled and held the crowd

Played sum wikked tunes then mate, including

Motorcycle - As The Rush Comes

Your booty - i especially loved that - kept pestering christian to use the flanger on the djm (i apologise for that) top mixer that!

Ferry Corsten - Rock Your Body Rock

and im stumped from there..haha!

Anyway, as christian said, the dj due on at 10 showed his face then said he was off to get sum stuff, he never returned - which led to me and katie frantically running round trying to find the organiser to sort it. He said bang a cd on - so christian stuck on jules album that i had given him that evening (not my copy) and we had to leave. Sidenote- at the end of the night we came into the bar to find that the cd had gone - means some fukker got a copy of jules album for free, lucky f***er! Never mind  )

So we rushed upstairs and the organiser informed me that jules was there and that he was delaying jules set so that christian could get 15-20 mins in to warm-up the crowd. After a bit more mixer advice (haha - we cracked it eventually matey!) christian got the crowd suitably raving for jules. I was stood behind the decks loving christians little set and i looked to my left and jules was stood next to me!   . First thing he did was get his record bag out (i was like eh??) - turns out he uses it as a boozebag! Got his vodka and DIET cherry coke cans out and got on the booze. I had a quick chat with him and showed hima message tim had sent me to forward to jules making the connection that i knew tim and said tim & steve had met him at coloursfest etc. Had a flick thru jules cd's as he showed me how he organises them into catagories such as 'Hard' 'Bass' etc.. I tell ya, i was tempted to pocket a couple of them cd's - so annoying how close to some tunesu can get but never be able to own them for months, arghh!! I had Team Sr & DT8 - Hold me in my hand, argh!! haha :D

Jules was then due on the decks and suitably took over from christian very very smoothly (impressive mate! 8-) ) After christian again needed help with more equipment - this time the mic, it was beyond my knowledge so told christian to go ask jules - he swiflty flicked a switch and he was sorted. Jules then promptly mixed into cherry whip and then christian got on the mic and introduced jules to an absolutely huge reaction from the crowd - looked amazing from the stage and had my hairs standing on end 8-)

Anyway, jules proceeded to bosh out the big big banging tunes which me and chrisitian were absolutely loving, we kept going in front to enjoy his set fully then go have a rest at the back of the decks, was quality!

So apart from the tunes christian listed i can remeber jules also playing:

Fabio Stein - Tran 4

Southside Spinners - Lovestruck

Jules & Woods - So Special

Jules - Keep Me Running

thats about all i can remember for the moment, been a big weekend for tunes!!

One thing i do remember was christian handing over a cdr of his bootleg to jules to which the bloke stood next to christian seemed to almost take offense to and looked at christian as if to say 'u aint got a chance mate'....little did he know christian was a dj on the night and has already had a couple of his bootlegs played by jules! 8-) 8-) 8-)

So towards the end of jules set the organiser told me he was about to finish so i dived into the crowd and dragged christian out so we could wait for jules - at which point DJ Luck & MC Neat turned up with they're 30 man posse to take over the stage..

Jules came off and was swiftly escorted along with myself & christian up to the organisers flat where jules, christian, myself, jules driver, his manager and jules 'heavy' were left. After topping his glass up with more vodka jules took a breath and then started cracking jokes and chatting to us..

christian sorted his equipment out (no help needed from me this time  ) and then proceeded to deliver a really really good interview to jules - i wud have been pooing myself! I videod a few minutes of the interview and features christian's little trip up, haha!

After the interview had finished jules said he didn't have to leave for ages so we could just chill so we started chatting about everything music related and as i was so excited at the time i can't remember what we chatted about...

i asked him about kirsty hawkshaw tho - he said like he said to tim & steve that basically she was rediculously awkward and annoying and why bother when u can find someone much easier...

I also showed jules my album which i showed him previosuly on stage which made his eyes light up - he said it was the first time he'd seen the finished product! He interrogated me as to how i'd managed to get it, and then admitted that he didn't like the cover photo as he looked 'too gay'

Probably the most major thing i can remember i asked him about was his Radio 1 show - a rather debated subject of the moment. Lets just say i was shocked when i said 'how do you feel about R1 changing your show so much recently..' - and jules said, 'well, good because it was my influence that has brought about these changes' i asked him ellaborate and he basically said he has to try and accomodate to a wider audience now that trance is no where near as much in limelight as previous years.... Hmm, a interesting one - was jules not revealing anything as his manger was in the room at the time...i just don't know!

Well anyway, this must be boring u all so i'll wrap it up now as im getting tired too! Jules spent about an hour chatting to us but then had to leave as he had a set in sheffield to perform, so we packed our stuff up - got jules to sign our vinyl which he seemed impressed about and then we left - but not before jules yoinked a bottle of JD from the organisers flat - haha!

As we went outside there were security all guarding the building and demanded to know who we were, haha! We said our goodbyes to jules and thanked him for his time chatting to us. After much more hassle from the chuffing bouncers despite out VIP bands we finally got out and found a taxi home, twats wern't they mate?

I then proceeded to get up the next morning to get to sheff and get boozing again before my hangover could kick in!!

An amazing night that i will never forget, i guess i have it all due to christian so i must thankyou immensely for sorting it all out matey, u are a legend!

Pics to follow and vids, just uploading as we speak!

Hope that review gives you some flavour of the night!

Aces man you filled in all my blanks!! And yes, I was lagging behind on the drinks front, I guess I was too busy entertaining crowds :P That and the b*stard bottles kept on frothing on my CDs! We must def have another night when i'm not on the decks so much so I can get nicely wasted!

And yeh, bouncers as usual being knobs - are they genetically programmed to be?!

Top night in all though!
