Is It Back 2 Old Way's 4 Jules On A Friday Nyt

Surprisingly, no :( I will have a good chat with him in November I think, when he is in Durham...

I hate looking backwards, but I feel this Archive is more important than ever so people do not forget the old days. Whilst the majority of us have moved on, people do have short memories and I am more determined than ever to hold evidence of the massive contribution and influence Jules has had to dance music; we are evidence of it.

The tracklist shows no, it looks an even dodgier show sorta!

Are the dj phone ins needed randomly dotted around the show? even tong stopped the usual suspects a few years back!

The recovery tune at the end could be an annoyance, just as bad as the last dance.

And what the hell is goin on with jules playing trance stuff and then goin into house what looks like one long mix? given goin back he did pitch up needin you to wack in with trance but still... looks an interesting tracklist, listening will give a clearer picture methinks.

I listened 2 the show the 1st track he played was a nice track Mason – Quarter [Dave Lambert & Housetrap Mix]

I enjoyed the show was hard staying awake through the full show i must admit but it was all good apart from that awful Armin V Tiesto - Another Suburban Train :o

What's goin on there this was goin around on white label from hard to find records a few year's back and it's total poo im shocked he's even decided 2 play it @ all it's s***.....

But apart from that good show ;)

Armin made that bootleg way back in 2004, I first heard him play it at Global that year, trust me it was immense being there for it. I heard Suburban Train comin in & started jumping like mad, then the vocal came thru which was a surprise but I thought it worked really well.

I duno why Jules has suddenly started playing it 3yrs on, doesn't really have the same effect in a Jules set, much in the same way that 'For An Angel' only really works it's 'wow' factor when PvD plays it

Having listened its better than 'on paper', it all flows very nicely although the 30 second it seems longh dj on the phone bits semed pointless because of how short they are but not as bad as I thought though.

Jules is doing his old trick of pitching up electro house stuff to bang in with trance and with the tracks hes choosing it works fine.

For a first new style show i give it a 8/10 ;)

On his show last night, Jules said that Armin played it as his last track at a recent festival (Planet Love?) and it was handed to him then (i'm assuming by Armin) - and he said he's supported it since.

Perhaps Armin has had clearance to give it a full release, so he's started handing it out now?

With regards to the show, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It flowed really well, and the whole thing was pretty pacey.

The DJ phone-ins were played over the top of intro's to tunes - therefore the music wasn't interupted, which is the way I like it. I tune in to listen to music, not hearing random DJ's telling us what they ate for dinner and asking us what city Turnmills is in.

The only annoying part was the last 5 minutes - I didn't see the relevance of having DJ's picking a non-dance tune at the end of a dance show, when another dance show is about to start. It seems very pointless.

Hmm he might possibly be planning to release it, or Jules may have asked for it outright, but I doubt whether Tiesto would approve of a full release, he's notoriously awkward with stuff like that.

Does appear a bit of a shame that the T&T has gone but if it means that some of the other features stay banished then I'm not gona complain too much

In respect of his show format, Jules has this to say in his dairy.

The journey back over to Bognor was less than 45 minutes, during which I heard my new Friday night Radio 1 show for the first time. It’s good to hear your show in context, now that the show will be prerecorded most weeks. The tunes are far more representative of one of my club sets than my old Saturday show. I hope you like!

Looks like this format will be around for a bit. I'm not fussed if it's prerecorded if it means he plays his proper style for the most part.

It also means there shouldn't be too many (if any) 'shouts on the phone.' If only he'd drop the 'DJ on the phone' thing too. Maybe Jules should ring in on the way to his next gig :P

Quite honestly I am sick of sending emails supposedly to the people that matter at R1. I never get a non-automated response. Threads like this and emailing Jules directly seem to be the better ways of getting your voice heard

btw, how little atmosphere was there on Dance Anthems last week. Where's Dangerous's posse gone? (Presumably there were already on the dancefloor by 11pm  )

Come on guys, stop being so negative.

I honestly thought that last weeks show was the best i've heard for a few years. No random phone-ins, no "What City is Turnmills in?" 5 times per hour, no mash-up monkeys for the first 10 minutes, and no crap electro warm-up rubbish. The show was sandwiched by specialist dance shows and not urban music. It was everything we said we wanted a few months ago - a format similar to the old Friday nights!

Now we've got a format close to the old Friday shows, you're talking about contacting the program controller to have it restored to the Saturday format.

Times change guys - the Jules show has started its third era. It will NEVER be better than the old Friday shows, but given time, it could be equal to it, which, lets face it, the Saturday show wasn't. For its first week, I thought that last Saturdays show showed some great potential.

It did feel a little "bare" - but I think the restoration of the "Tried and Tested" feature, plus a 5 track flat-out mix at the end of the show would sort that out.

Give it time guys - writing the show off after just one week is a bit harsh.

I think we're all comparing to the old Friday night shows too much and wanting that back - but its never gonna happen. The BBC no longer have the finances to fund live shows, Jules is too busy to give up gigs to sit in a studio each Friday, and the music has changed drastically since then too. Those days have gone, and we've got great memories to remember. Bring on the new era I say!

As for Dance Anthems, I still feel its too late for that kind of show. It should have been on after Pete Tongs show - or better still, kept in its old Sunday show. Dance Anthems is the ONLY show that needs listener interaction - and that was sadly missing last week. Dave also didn't seem as enthusiastic on the radio either - it sounded like he missed the listener interaction too.

As for Annie Mac - her show is too random. There was no flow. I heard Drum n Bass, House, Electro and Breaks all within the space of 20 minutes. It needs to flow better between Tong and Pearce if that show is going to work. I still think Eddie would have worked better on Fridays, with Annie Mac having Eddies slot on Thursday.

Less of the plural! I was slagging off the way the BBC don't respond, not Jules's new show!!

I caught the first hour live last Friday and am just finishing off listening again and am very impressed. Music throughout, even when the DJs were on the phone. That in itself is an annoying feature but I guess some kind of interactive feature is inevitable on R1.

Less of the plural!

Sorry, it wasn't just aimed at you two - just everyone in general (figure of speech).

There's been a bit of negativity in other threads about the new format, etc, and I think its a bit harsh.

As you say, it was music throughout - even during the DJ's on the phone bit, so for me, thats a huge bonus over the Saturday show.

With all the talking between tunes, a second "T&T" tune, competitions, the bodge-up boys and the last dance feature, I felt that time was being wasted that could have been used for 3 or 4 other tunes. Thankfully, that has changed with the new feature now.

Plus we don't have to hear Russell Brand introducing Westwood - which in my opinion, is worth the BBC license fee alone :D

Annoying, is the word I'd use, considering it's clearly the output of Ronald van Gelderen (see earlier release Sustain, for hard proof)

I'll be honest with you all, I doubt whether I will ever listen live to another Jules R1 show now, the only way I can see me listening in is if i'm on a car journey somewhere late at night.

As regards the new format I will reserve judgement on it until I listen again (probably tomorrow). Briggsy has raised some points in that it will never be the same as it used to be with the old Friday night shows. However I feel that a back-to-basics approach with music being the sole focus is excellent, the most successful shows broadcasting at the moment have very little in the way of features, etc & while the context of it being a Radio1 show dictates that there must be some kind of radio interaction, I feel the closer it can get to an ASOT format, the better

Which goes back to a point I made when the change was announced. Radio has changed so much with the internet now with many people choosing to listen again. I guess I listen to about 20% of ASOTs live and the rest I listen again to or download for my iPod. Why shouldn't Jules's show be any different.
