Agree with you on all points. As someone who buys all tracks I play legit I can safely say that I would be a lot less reluctant to take a chance on some tracks just from a 3mins sample on beatport. Hearing the full track via soundcloud/youtube lets me get a proper feel for it

Paul was an absolutely top bloke & I used to love listening to Solid State on Saturdays! He reigned things in, as far as I know & went more down the radio presenting route. He was never a particularly regular club DJ (smaller events primarily). I'll always be indebted to him as he featured me as a "Solid State Rising Star" back in 2006! I got to do a full interview live with him on air and had a 30mins mix played out

It's impossible to second guess Jules' tastes and motivations (in terms of DJing) but I doubt he is as motivated by money as some would suggest. I'd imagine with the savvy investments he's made over the years, the huge pay packets he has collected, the money-spinning residencies, the success of JS in Ibiza & everything else, that money doesn't really come into it anyway. The law career can't pay too badly either?! If this is the sound that Jules is into then fair play, as has been said we've all moved on regardless & I do not mourn the passing of trance (as we used to know it). Honestly I have zero desire for a Jules classics mix, now or when he retires. The archives here are far beyond what a new classics mix would encapsulate anyway. They have that spontaneity, that freshness (despite their age) and that timeless quality which makes them unique and truly amazing. Jules playing classics (as he did on his final R1 show) would not come close to it and would just disappoint those who tuned in. Many DJs have tried to trade off of former glories & gone down the classics route and it has done nothing but destroy them (for the most part). Why would Jules want that when he still gets booked plenty and remains (somewhat) relevant?

I hope he really goes to town and tries to make a proper essential mix (i.e. not just a 2 hour mix which anyone in the world could make). I'll keep an eye out for it but, unfortunately, like most I doubt it will blow me away. The fact he's asking for classics recommendations is not particularly encouraging!

TN 3 & 4 were both excellent - but only CD 2 on each compilation. You could clearly tell that Ferry got told what to play on CD1 of both sets and then got freedom on Disc 2. TN4 disc 2 is really cool, loads of deeper and twisted tracks which made a change from the anthem after anthem style. The last TN I got was TN 2001 - again CD1 was a write off but CD was blinding!
