  1. ... and we're discussing his haircut?? :rubbish:
  2. Just don't use them as water bombs - i was nearly knocked out by one once ... they don't burst!!
  3. Great tunes but poor old Jules (& the other DJ's). Given what Gatecrasher was charging for this night I think it's pretty obvious that they really should have tried harder. It's not rocket science to ensure that the decks & mixer are working properly. Probably all too busy doing lines, drinking champagne and counting their money to really care about the night itself! No wonder there was a backlash against the 'superclubs' after the millennium.

Is it really that high still? I imagined it would be at least 50:50 due to iTunes.

... and of course there's Sarah Ferguson (Fergie) who I think still lives in the US? Are the f****** Black Eyed Peas really the reason for the name change?
  6. YES that's it mate, so banging! Cheers!! Hadn't heard the Dave Clarke story. What a bell end.

Yes production stopped at the end of 2010.

This used to be a real issue for me! Fortunately the decks are back now and well maintained again because of the use of Traktor Scratch et al.
  9. Hi all, Jules played a record back in 2000 (specifically 15.12.00 Live from Code in Birmingham) that went "Mis-fit, haha" over & over. In the track list archives it says that this was D.A.V.E The Drummer - 'One Last One'. I've looked up this tune and it ain't it! Any ideas what the correct id is? Cheers, Tim.

I have had bookings recently where i've been asked "You will be playing vinyl, won't you?" I should add that these questions tend to come from people who are at least 35!

Riding the pitch never seemed like a good idea to me. If the record is going just a little too fast and you adjust the pitch down to get it back in time, you then have to guess where it was before in order to keep it in beat, or else it's then too slow & you're suddenly having to pitch up (more often than not in a club there is not enough light to see the %). As with you chaps, I always found it far more accurate & quick to slow the platter gently with one finger (or speed it up by pushing the label) and then make the appropriate adjustment with the pitch depending on just how quickly the beats moved away from each other. I always wondered if this was indeed the subject of the title "Pitchin' (In Every Direction)" ??

Sorry, i'm not actually blaming Zabiela at all (although didn't he work closely with Pioneer R&D at one stage? ;-)). He was simply an example of a DJ who, to me, epitomises where DJ technology currently is, and how far you can take it. For sure vinyl is heavy, delicate, expensive and makes no sense at all, but then art forms & hobbies rarely make sense. Young kids are bound to go down the mp3 route - it's quicker, easier, cheaper and all that they have ever known. I fell in love with DJing when / because it was a beautifully simple, yet skilful art. I guess it still can be if you hook up 2 cdj's, put tape over the bpm readout and leave your laptop at home!! I think that you're absolutely right Cheese - everyone will have a say in the music played at parties of the future.

Wow, DJing really has changed with technology. I have always loved the 'simple nature' of 2 turntables & a mixer, a bag full of records & a rocking party! I do not share Zabiela's passion for new technology. It just seems over-complicated and messy to me. In good news, I read in this month's DJ Mag that cd is now the struggling format whilst downloads & vinyl sales are both doing ok.

Totally agree with the points above, cdj's are boring to watch AND boring to use imo. I still buy tracks on vinyl where I can.

Mixes nowadays do seem tame & polished compared to the 'vinyl era'. They are too perfect.
  16. Jules only featured briefly on the 'How Clubbing ...' programme. The live house party was really rather good ... "Friday night is house party night as Channel 4 hands over creative control to six top-class DJs in an unprecedented live television event, starting at midnight. In the past DJs have taken over warehouses, fields, car-parks and derelict office blocks. This summer, for the first time ever, DJs take control of a national broadcaster to bring the country together with a six-hour house party. With no advert breaks, no commentary, no interruptions and a line-up of top international DJs; - Grandmaster Flash, - Annie Mac, - Horse Meat Disco, - Soul II Soul, - Erick Morillo - A-Trak The DJ's will play live to the nation with six hour-long sets in a clubbing experience like no other. This is not a programme about clubbing; this is the club. Channel 4 turns the television into the ultimate DJ booth with the party blasting through the TV, phone and laptop screens to transform living rooms, bedrooms and bars right across the nation into dance floors."
  17. Apparently Jules features a lot - I have recorded it to watch tomorrow )

I'm not actually sure, but given how he likes to write his monthly diary reports it would be an opportunity missed!

I agree with you chaps, the tunes & mixing in those 2 clips sound great! We're starting to touch on topics here which have been covered elsewhere; He's moved in a direction that many of us wouldn't personally choose and can't understand, but I'm sure that there are many 16-23 year olds who think he is amazing right now!! May be he chose to target that audience intentionally rather than continue to compete with his former trance chums who, whilst also changing their sound, have stayed closer to where they were 10 years ago. He is very business-minded, as evidenced by his other ventures - clothing, restaurant, etc. He has also always been more commercial than most, ie. BCM rather than Space. May be he's always made business decisions when it comes to what direction to take - he jumped from funk & soul to acid house and then onto trance. He did rather well out of the whole trance explosion!! He then proceeded to sell off / give away his entire record collection - something that many of us record collectors would never dream of. Then, when Radio 1 wanted more funky, cheesy electro tunes he went off in that direction and kept them happy for a few more years. I don't know if many of you read his interview in the back of May's DJ Mag? Lucky 7 asks DJ's about their most influential records and record collection. I didn't think it sounded like he particularly has a passion for his records. Despite all that, he was a hero of mine in the late nineties and early noughties and I owe my love of vinyl & DJing to him. We will probably never know the truth, or will that autobiography reveal all?? (and net Jules more £££'s)

But that would require us to see Jules play, which I don't fancy at all given the tune selection, jingles & type of crowd he must now attract. How OLD do I sound?!! :rubbish:
  23. I'd say it says a lot about the voters!!
